The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) in Danville, VA seeks a full-time Laboratory Research Specialist II (Position # 184-2013). This position will be a member of a research team developing and improving systems for novel plant development. The Laboratory Research Specialist II will work to integrate current skills and knowledge of molecular biology, plant tissue culture & transformation, plant microbe interactions & biochemistry into research on the development of new plants and plant products.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Modifies, refines, adapts, or develops laboratory techniques and analytical procedures to meet specific experimental needs in plant breeding and genetics
  • Conducts laboratory experiments using various techniques such as plant tissue culture, plant transformation, nucleic acid isolation, PCR, molecular marker analysis, gene expression profiling, microscopy, various types of electrophoresis & maintenance, propagation, & evaluation of plant germplasm
  • Operates complex, highly specialized laboratory instruments & instructs others in their use & operation
  • Carries out necessary analyses, & accurately records & analyzes experimental data
  • Operates in a culture of safety in carrying out laboratory assignments, including proper handling/storage of chemicals
  • Reviews & follows all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that apply to assigned duties and projects
  • Reviews scientific journals & brochures from companies offering improvements in biotechnology applications, & keeps abreast of recent literature in the area of assigned research

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological discipline required with 3+ years of experience; Master’s preferred
  • Experience and demonstrated competence in plant tissue culture and molecular biology required, specifically gene cloning techniques and protein analysis methods, with related coursework or experience
  • Knowledge of gene modification techniques, such as site-directed mutagenesis, insertion/deletion mutagenesis, & recombinant protein expression in bacteria & fungi highly desired
  • Highly developed organizational & record-keeping skills, computer skills & written/oral communication skills
  • Ability to work with limited supervision
  • Creativity & ability to work productively independently & cooperatively with other team members required
