Performs blood collection from patients and, under the direction of Clinical Laboratory Scientists, performs technical and clerical support functions. Laboratory Assistants serve as front line representatives of the department in their direct care of patients and are key members of the health care team.

High school graduate or equivalent
Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training course or experience as a phlebotomist in a clinical setting
Ability to communicate effectively in English
Must have valid driver's license

Job Duties:
The following criteria identify duties to describe the principal functions of the job and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all work requirements that may be inherent in the position.
Performs routine adult and pediatric venipunctures with proficiency on a daily basis at various phlebotomy locations (on- and off-site)
Obtains capillary, neonatal and pediatric blood samples according to departmental procedures, based upon assessment of patient condition; adheres to Universal precautions at all times
Prioritizes work to achieve maximum efficiency, adjust schedule to respond immediately to STAT requests, and obtain timed specimens within 10 minutes of time of order
Checks patient identification and applies labels to specimens correctly according to laboratory standards
Uses Hospital/Laboratory Computer System to accurately enter orders, log receipt of specimens, to check status of patient orders, and to request appropriate modifications to this information
Runs phlebotomy management reports as scheduled to monitor workload
Runs phlebotomy management reports every half hour during assigned shift to monitor workload
Provides patient/visitor reception and clerical support in accordance with departmental policies and procedures
Performs one or more of the following laboratory functions with supervision, as needed:
Performs routine urinalysis testing using laboratory instrumentation according to departmental procedures
Processes patient specimens according to departmental procedures
Performs routine processing of specimens for in-house and referred testing in accordance with departmental procedures
Performs Ivy Bleeding time procedure on patients according to departmental procedure manual
Performs functions related to blood component preparation
Operates Hospital vehicle to and from off-site locations and transports specimens, appropriately packaged, in vehicle back to main laboratory
Performs other duties as assigned: e.g., Performance Improvement monitoring, phlebotomy assignments, stocking and "clean-up" functions, assists in teaching of new students and staff, health screening, clerical functions including filing, and other routine testing functions, etc

Physical Demands:
Must be able to sit, stand and walk most of the time; push/pull, stoop, kneel, or crouch occasionally
Must be able to use hands to finger, grasp and feel
Ability to lift up to 10 pounds when needed
Vision requirements: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
Must be able to clearly recognize alarms, understand and follow calls and instructions

Work Environment:
Works near moving mechanical parts occasionally
Exposure to outdoor weather conditions occasionally
Hospital setting with varying degrees of noise level and activity
