23andMe is seeking a talented Lab Operations Manager to manage our new east coast laboratory. The successful candidate will be a key contributor to the operations team, bringing the new facility online as well as managing routine laboratory operations.


In this newly created role, you will be the primary point of contact for 23andMe’s east coast laboratory partner for both routine work and special projects.

Manage the project to establish the east coast laboratory, including equipment installation, validation and logistics.

Day-to-day management of east coast laboratory partner for genotyping, sequencing, and other scientific projects.

Lead technology transfer projects for new laboratory and implementing new technologies in the lab.

Work with laboratory partner to assure compliance with clinical laboratory standards and the 23andMe quality system

Prepare and review metrics for laboratory processing success rates and turnaround times. Partner with labs to improve performance against these key metrics.

Lead process improvement initiatives to continuously optimize quality, cost and efficiency.

Expected travel 50%.

The ideal candidate will possess the following characteristics:

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to explain technical concepts and details to a variety of audiences (e.g., technical staff, business management, research colleagues, product & engineering colleagues, vendors, and customers).

The ability to prioritize, multitask, and maintain a positive attitude in dealing with internal and external partners.

5+ years of postgraduate industrial experience in biology, genetics, or related R&D, with a large component of hands-on laboratory work.

Experience managing and tracking projects involving many participants

Experience in technology transfer or laboratory/manufacturing facility startup.

Experience in or significant exposure to Validation and/or QA/QC in a regulated scientific industry (e.g., in vitro diagnostics or medical testing, CLIA or GLP laboratory, GMP manufacturing), and familiarity with key concepts of operating under a Quality System.

Demonstrated experience in leading teams, particularly cross-functional teams.

Experience with project management work and tools.

Bachelor’s degree and 5 years industry experience.
