Ke'aki Technologies has an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Technician . The position will be located at U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, Frederick, Maryland supporting the Center for Aerobiological Sciences. The position requires US Citizenship, a favorable National Agency Check with Law and Credit Coverage (NACLC) submitted prior to reporting for first day of work, and a signed confidentiality agreement.

The Center for Aerobiological Sciences (CAS), one of the only medical biodefense research programs in the country focused in high containment infectious disease aerobiology. The CAS conducts and supports research on aerosol science, inhalation disease pathogen esis, and evaluation of medical countermeasures for diseases caused by aerosolized biological threat agents. The CAS is a highly dynamic work/laboratory environment that demands performance of high quality results-based research, academic scholarship, and overall ability to work together with a diverse group of investigators and technicians from a variety of basic and applied scientific disciplines. This is a rare opportunity to join one of the most interesting and dynamic biomedical research programs in the nation.

Perform aerosol exposure studies. Maintain and calibrate aerosol systems. Perform and supervise biological decontamination procedures for Class III biosafety cabinets post-aerosol. Assist in the maintenance of a modern, well-equipped and up-to-date aerobiology laboratory. Characterize aerosols using standardized equipment available in the laboratory. Independently carry out assays to determine aerosol concentrations of biological agents to include protein assays, bacterial culture and viral plaque assays. Manipulate animals prior to, during, and after aerosol challenge using appropriate safety procedures. Assist with animal manipulations such as bleeding, immunizations, minute volume measurements, etc. Independently monitor animals for clinical signs of disease. Independently utilize techniques for protein quantification, antibody assays, and tissue culture assays. Perform basic microbiological and virological methodology for quantification with minimal supervision. Be able to use standard computer software and enter results into databases. Become familiar with and perform tasks according to SOPs and USAMRIID regulations and work in BSL-3 and BSL-4 level laboratories. Attend GLP training as required and maintain records at that standard. Operate and maintain analytical instrumentation according to the requirements of both the BSL-3 and GLP environments. Perform laboratory quality management/quality assurance activities to the required FDA standard.

Master’s degree in Microbiology or related field of study and 4+ years of experience OR Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or related field and 9+ years of experience. Must have experience wo rking in Bio-safety Level 3 (BSL 3 ) containment suites. Knowledge of and skill in applying, the principles, concepts, and techniques applicable to a limited scientific area of microbiology and aerobiology work in a medical laboratory sufficient to: work with commonly known pathogenic bacteria, and; ensure that the full range of routine methods, procedures, techniques, and applicable quality controls have been correctly conducted. Must be able to maintain a safe workplace and comply with occupational health and safety rules and regulations. Candidate is required to attend safety training(s) relative to his/her position. Must complete mandatory Federal, DoD, Army, and USAMRIID trainings as required. Enrollment in the Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) for handling select agents is required. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements as regulated by Army Regulation 50-1 (AR 50-1) Must possess organizational and communication skills and have a proven track record of working independently and as a team player. Must receive necess ary vaccinations needed to perform work with biological agents.
