Responsibilities include:
  • Document receipt of umbilical cord blood and cord tissue
  • Following established protocols, perform all necessary steps in processing umbilical cord tissue for cryopreservation and cell culture and other necessary assays
  • Assist Clinical Laboratory Scientists in processing cord blood units for cryopreservation under direct supervision
  • Assist Clinical Laboratory Scientists in performing laboratory tests using automated instrumentation under direct supervision
  • Perform data entry of processing and test results
  • Assist with maintaining supply inventory and ensuring minimum threshold levels of all supplies are kept at all times
  • Receive and document all incoming and outgoing supplies
  • Assist Clinical Laboratory Scientists in preparing test requisitions for the reference laboratory
  • Prepare and properly document all test specimens referred to reference laboratories
  • Assist in labeling cryovial tubes and preparing printed labels for the cord blood and cord tissue freezing bags
  • Assist Clinical Laboratory Scientists in maintaining cord blood and cord tissue accession and freezer inventory logs
  • Perform daily temperature and liquid nitrogen level checks
  • Perform daily alarm monitor checks
  • File all reference laboratory reports after they have been reviewed by the Laboratory Manager/Director, Laboratory Operations or designee
  • Prepare and organize laboratory documentation for filing in client charts
  • Assist and perform ancillary laboratory procedures that do not require a Clinical Laboratory Scientist license
  • Assist Clinical Laboratory Scientists with preparing frozen cord blood or cord tissue products for transfer to another facility as requested
  • Attend presentations and in-service training sessions as required
  • Assist with cover for responses to emergency situations related to storage freezers and other monitored equipment
  • Report any "out-of-control" results or equipment failures to the immediate supervisor for investigation or repair
  • Maintain the general work area in a neat and organized manner to help promote a safe work environment
  • Conform to the policies mandated for utilization of all personal protective equipment
  • Become familiar with and adhere to established guidelines for laboratory safety
  • Report to the Laboratory Manager/Director, Laboratory Operations all safety violations and accidents for immediate intervention
  • Comprehend and follow all FDA and AABB cell and tissue banking regulations
  • Comprehend and follow all Good Tissue Practice guidelines
  • Comprehend and follow clinical sterility and aseptic techniques and procedures
  • Maintain regular work schedule; arrive to work on time and ready to perform tasks
  • A Bachelor's degree in Science
  • A minimum of 1-2 years of related laboratory experience and/or training that demonstrates the ability to perform responsibilities successfully
  • Clinical Laboratory Technician certification preferred, but not required
  • Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word and Excel and ability to learn custom FamilyCord systems such as Microsoft NAV, FileMaker and others as needed
  • Ability to speak and write English; communicate effectively and professionally with clients and external contacts; read and interpret documents, such as procedure manuals; effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to clients and employees
  • Ability to comprehend and carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form and ability to address and resolve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively as a team member
