The Lead Communications Strategist, Issues & Crisis will be responsible for the monitoring, analysis, reporting and will assist in the creation of communication plans and execution in response to issues and crisis across the global enterprise. The Issues & Crisis team is focused on high-visibility crisis and issues management. This role will report to the VP, Issues & Crisis, and work with the VP, External Communications and VP, Reputation Management to create communications strategies that protect MetLife’s reputation, with day-to-day responsibility for managing a broad portfolio of anticipated and unexpected issues that could threaten the company’s image.
This position will also work across Global Communications, partnering with a variety of people outside the function – including senior leadership, as well as acting as a resource for other key leaders and Global Communications colleagues on issues and crisis matters. This role will have high visibility and exposure to senior leadership. Job Requirements
Supports the implementation of company programs to protect and build the Company’s reputation by anticipating and managing issues and crises.
Planning and Execution – Develops strategic plans, manages execution and measures results.
Executes communications strategies, adjusts priorities to manage new and emerging issues and situations.
May develop, track and maintain program budgets.
Plans and manages business unit/department processes and practices to ensure that programs are aligned with company business goals and objectives.
Counsels appropriate stakeholders on communications programs, strategies, events and their potential enterprise-wide implications.
Develops and implements processes for planning, updating, publishing, editing and archiving crisis communications plans.
Ensures adherence to legal and operational compliance requirements. Initiates and cultivates collaborative relationships with key stakeholders globally – both inside and outside the organization.
Manages multiple complex issues that may cross business units.
Manages the preparation of communications relating to operations, product changes and other initiatives to ensure that media, partners and other stakeholders receive appropriate communications.
Serves as a company spokesperson and directs issues management media relations efforts.
Maintains and expands relationships with prominent media contacts, including responding to inquiries for information. Experience Required
At least 10 years of experience in communications, with a focus on issues and crisis management.
Excellent writing skills, including experience in creating, writing, editing, proof reading within a professional organization.
Media relations skills; previous external public relations experience required.
Agency experience desirable.
Strong project management skills.
Previous financial services industry experience and knowledge helpful.
Ability to quickly establish credibility and build productive relationships across the organization.
Recognized as a team player who willingly shares knowledge and information with others
Exercises sound judgment as a communications professional.
Produces high-quality work at a professional communications level.
Strong presentation, oral and written communications skills:
Ability to formulate a clear of point of view on complicated issues and create a concise and well-written narrative to express it.
Ability to explain concepts and make them relevant to the audience.
Strong work ethic – Demonstrated ability to roll up sleeves and get work done, even when outside the scope of the job.
Ability to build credibility and influence effectively with senior management and communicate with all levels of the organization.
Experience developing creative, effective approaches to difficult communications challenges
Adept at dealing with ambiguity— forming a cohesive and effective outcome from potentially incongruous facts (or lack thereof) and individual perspectives. Education Required
Degree in Communications, Journalism, English or equivalent, relevant experience. Business Category
