This position is located at Craggy Correctional Center in Buncombe County, NC. Work in this class involves the custody and security of inmates outside the confines of the correctional facility. Employees function as the officer-in-charge of a group of inmates during outside work activities. Duties are characterized by independent decision making, within established guidelines and procedures due to the physical separation from supervisory personnel. Work also usually involves the direction of other officers during these work details. Provides custody supervision for an inmate squad involved in maintenance and clean-up activities along the State's highways. Enforces rules and regulation for safety, health and protection of inmates and staff. Complete CPR, firearms & unarmed self-defense training and work a varied schedule
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
Effectively communicate with inmates, staff and members of the general public. Perform searches of persons, places and objects. Work rotating, fixed or split shifts, weekends and holidays. Respond at any time to emergency calls, transport inmates on approved departmental vehicles at any time, day or night in any weather, traffic and road conditions. Perform rescue functions to include CPR, basic first aid, physically removing people from dangerous areas and using fire fighting equipment to include fire hoses, extinguishers and breathing apparatus. Establish and maintain control of violent or uncooperative inmates. Defend oneself or others against violent attack. Apprehend escaped/fleeing inmates to include running, jumping, climbing, crawling and/or using reasonable physical force to include deadly force. Load, unload, aim and fire handguns/shotguns at the level of proficiency required. Maintain a professional demeanor at all times to include times of mental and verbal abuse by inmates.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Graduation from high school and one year of experience in inmate custody or law enforcement work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications: must be eligible for certification by the NC Criminal Justice Training and Standards Council. . .
