Job Summary:

The University has hosted the federally funded Trio Program Upward Bound continuously since 1966. Upward Bound is a college preparatory program for high school students from families with low-incomes or parents who do not have a college degree. Our goal is to increase the number of students from these backgrounds who complete their college education. A group of dedicated staff, students, and parents work to create a learning environment that respects and honors the culture and history of diverse populations so that our graduates will use their education to create more just societies here and throughout the world.

This position is responsible for the overall development and coordination of the STEM curriculum and pedagogy implemented by the project.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Recruits, interviews, selects and supervises all UBMS academic staff (teachers and tutors)
  • Coordinates requests and assignment of all academic facilities used
  • Conducts all entry and exit assessments of project participants
  • Coordinates assignment, scheduling, and record keeping of participants’ academic programing and progress toward achieving goals and objectives
  • Approve all course credit transfers to participant high schools
  • Maintain and provide all academic data required to complete federal annual performance report
  • Coordinate all college admissions test applications and preparations sessions
  • Conducts courses in STEM subjects during Academic Year and Summer Sessions
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Masters in Education or Teaching Credential – High School Level in STEM field;
  • Three years experience in paid position working with students from target population
Other Responsibilities:
  • Extensive knowledge in one or more STEM areas
  • Extensive knowledge and experience teaching in public schools or educational equity programs serving a diverse student population.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of K-12 education, policies, and educational equity issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including presentation, communication, negotiation, leadership, problem-solving, and conflict resolution, with diverse populations and institutions
  • Extensive knowledge of higher education institutions, admissions, and matriculation processes.
  • Knowledge of state and national education policies, current education theories, and successful educational equity programs.
  • Extensive knowledge of youth and adolescent development theory, including issues facing low income, first generation, and urban youth. Demonstrated cultural awareness and the appreciation of the humanity of all with respect to race, gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a variety of settings and to maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Advanced writing skills with demonstrated experience producing complex reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret college admissions and financial aid policies and procedures to K-12 students, parents, and school representatives.
