Under the direct supervision of the Packing Supervisor or Production Supervisor, the Packing Assistant Lead plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates daily activities of the Packing Department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ÿ Continually monitors and controls that products packed meet specifications and are of the highest quality standards.

Ÿ Communicates effectively with Production and Maintenance personnel to resolve challenges with product quality or mechanical failures.

Ÿ Coordinates, organizes, and assigns subordinates daily job tasks to complete daily production schedule. Ensures that employees are trained as necessary to perform their job tasks.

Ÿ Assures that metal detector and other packaging equipment is operating properly.

Ÿ Monitors and controls freezer temperature and product core temperatures to specification, and informs Maintenance Department or Packing or Production Supervisor when freezer and/or product is out of specification.

Ÿ Monitors and ensures accuracy of case codes, case labeling, and retail bags.

Ÿ Ensures that case labeling is legible.

Ÿ Places palletized cases in their designated freezer area.

Ÿ Maintains sufficient materials for the Packaging Department, including but not limited to pallets, box cartons, box carton tape, master case inserts, baking instructions, pallet tags, correct retail bags, and correct box labels.

Ÿ Operate Forklift as a licensed driver, and hand or automated pallet jacks. Always operates the forklift in a safe manner. Attends a Forklift safety-training seminar at least once a year.

Ÿ Monitors and controls that Packaging Department employees are performing tasks to company quality and productivity standards.

Ÿ Ensures that employees wear proper protective freezer clothing when performing job tasks.

Ÿ Completes duties in accordance with quality assurance, GMPs, safety and other company programs and procedures, and in accordance with government codes and regulations.

Ÿ Maintains clean, organized and safe work area, including wiping and washing equipment, tools, containers and dollies; sweeping and mopping floors; and trash removal.

Ÿ Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Two years experience in an automated or semi-automated packing environment preferred. Forklift certification required. High School diploma or GED preferred.

LANGUAGE ABILITY:
Ability to read, comprehend and interpret written documents such as production schedules and case labels. Ability to write simple English sentences, and fill out shipping and receiving materials documents. Ability to comprehend verbal and written instructions. Ability to speak effectively with employees. Working knowledge of Spanish preferred.

MATH ABILITY:
Ability to count to 60. Ability to do simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Ability to write numbers legibly.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

COMPUTER SKILLS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software. Knowledge of inventory control software helpful Ability to learn new computer software as required by the company

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES:
Valid and current license for operating the Forklift required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is continuously exposed to cold (non-weather) conditions and to rapid changes in temperature, and is regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and extreme heat or cold (non-weather). The employee must be able to tolerate a work environment that contains flour dust. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can get loud.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to stand or walk, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is continuously required to use hands to finger, handle or feel product, machinery controls or materials. Manual dexterity and utilization of both hands and all fingers is required. The employee is frequently required to twist, bend and stoop, and occasionally to sit, climb or balance. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with the aid of a co-worker. The employee must occasionally push/pull manual or automated pallet jacks and other equipment. With the aid of co-workers, the employee is occasionally expected to push/pull equipment on wheels up to 75 to 200 pounds approximately 75 feet. Frequent flexing, extending and turning of the neck and head are required.

This position requires employee to have adequate communicating and observational skills, including seeing, speaking and hearing, due to the operation of various types of moving equipment used in the bakery. These requirements are for the safety of the employee and co-workers. These requirements are also necessary for collecting and distributing information to subordinates, and communicating with co-workers. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and color vision.
