Role Summary:
To provide administrative and paraprofessional legal support to City of Ann Arbor attorneys. A skilled position that requires specialized training, knowledge and experience in the legal field.

Essential Duties:
  • Provides assistance to attorneys in maintaining, tracking and indexing legal file
  • Prepares City ordinance amendments, resolutions and memos for City Council
  • Composes letters and memos
  • Reviews office documents to determine appropriate placement in filing system and makes appropriate entries into CityLaw document management system; creates and organizes files; files documents.
  • Opens, logs and distributes mail as needed
  • Screens telephone calls
  • Generates reports and spreadsheets as requested
  • Calendars and schedules meetings
  • Collegiality with attorneys, staff and public
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality
  • Review of contracts and business documents
  • Assists attorney's with legal research and due diligence
  • Manages and organizes workflow and documents for at least 3 attorney's
  • Prepares litigation pleadings; files documents with courts
Knowledge of: (position requirements at entry)
  • Legal terminology and formats
  • Legal procedures, court rules, and filing requirements

  • Office procedures
  • English grammar, composition, report and correspondence composition, real estate law and contracts.
Skills and Ability to: (position requirements at entry)
  • Typing of 65 wpm or more
  • Operation of office equipment including computers, fax machines, telephones and copiers
  • Demonstrate excellent computer software skills, including word processing, e-mail, spreadsheets and databases
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills - including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction

Training and Experience: (position requirements at entry)
  • College degree required with paralegal certification preferred
  • Five years legal assistant experience or executive assistant experience
  • Corporate/contract experience
  • Real estate/contract experience
  • Municipal government experience
