American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska Foundation
Legal Fellowship Opportunity

The American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska Foundation is glad to announce a new sponsorship opportunity for public interest legal fellows, and invites rising third-year law students and current lawyers to apply. As an integral part of the ACLU of Alaska, our fellows gain practical experience through defending and expanding Alaskans’ civil liberties and constitutional rights: they will work on lawsuits, legislative advocacy, policy research, and public education.

We will work with successful applicants to develop a funding proposal for specific organizations, including Equal Justice Works, Soros, and the Skadden Fellowship Foundation, and for law schools, such as Yale’s Arthur Liman Public Interest Fellowship and Chicago’s Postgraduate Public Interest Law Fellowship. We will help tailor a fellowship program to both address an important civil liberties issue and develop the fellow’s skills as a lawyer, while satisfying the funding organization’s requirements.

As the Alaska affiliate of the national ACLU, we address a wide range of constitutional violations and civil liberties issues. Our recent and ongoing cases include
  • The nation’s first judicial decision that transgender individuals have a constitutional right to a correct gender marker on their driver’s licenses;
  • Attempting to create a constitutional right to erase criminal records created by government misconduct;
  • Asserting the right of medical privacy on behalf of a class of women whose intimate medical records were seized and read by the State; and
  • Challenging an Anchorage law that curtails the free speech right of protest.

As an organization, we are particularly concerned about prisoners’ rights, LGBTQ matters, the right to privacy, and discrimination against Alaska Natives, immigrants, and other ethnic and racial minorities. While we will consider any proposal that engages civil liberties, prospective fellows are encouraged to review our website and current litigation docket ( ) before applying.

To apply, please send a résumé, writing sample, law school transcript, three references, and a cover letter that details specific interests and outlines a fellowship proposal to

The ideal fellow will think critically, write clearly and accessibly, have litigation experience (such as from a clinic or clerkship), and possess a real passion for the work of the ACLU.

We will begin to review applications on July 1, 2013. We expect that applicants who are rising 3Ls or judicial clerks will start the fellowship in September 2014. Current lawyers and 2013 graduates who have their own funding, such as a law school’s bridge fellowship, are welcome to start this year.

The ACLU of Alaska is an equal opportunity employer. All interested individuals, including racial and ethnic minorities, women, persons with disabilities, and LGBT persons are encouraged to apply.
