This position’s main responsibility is to provide general library functions at the circulation desk. It also includes service in a variety of other areas in the library. Work is performed under the general direction of a Librarian.
Functions & Duties:
As Library Aide:
Greets and offers assistance to library patrons in person and via telephone, including identifying and locating books and other publications.
Issues library cards using the library’s computer system.
Checks materials in and out using laser scanners, keyboards and receipt printers.
Informs patrons about general library policies and about circulation procedures.
Receives and records payments for fines, printers, and book sales.
Shelves books, magazines, DVD’s and other materials.
Instructs patrons in basic library related computer functions on in-house computers and from their home.
Performs one or more of the following:
Basic catalog data entry
Logging incoming magazines
Processing new books for the shelf with covers, pockets, labels
Repair books and/or DVD’s
Assist with design and production of forms and brochures
Contribute to library newsletter and webpage.
Notify patrons of overdue materials (via telephone, written and /or electronic notices.
Monitor office supplies
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Competencies:
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION:High School diploma or GED. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of alphanumeric call numbers and library filing requirements.
Knowledge of English, spelling, and basic math.
Knowledge of general library procedures and terms.
Knowledge of telephone etiquette.
One (1) year of full-time experience. Any other combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the work may be considered.

Skill in interpersonal communication.

Skill in the use of a computer.
Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.
Ability to sort and file alphabetically and numerically.
Ability to operate basic library equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, officials, and member of the general public.
Ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals and strong communication skills.
Ability to lift books weighing up to 20 pounds and to push book carts.
The work environment is inside an air-conditioned building. There are frequent interruptions from the staff and the general public for information or assistance.
The employee is frequently required to sit for long periods of time, work on a computer, stand, bend, talk and hear. The employee is required to walk, use hands, reach, and handle or feel objects or controls. May be required to occasionally perform some lifting.
Handles patron requests and/or complaints in person or by phone.
