Job Description Summary
Delivery of a range of basic services and technologies from a service desk and throughout the library during the overnight shift to assure that the library is comfortable and safe for students and other university personnel. Participate as a member of a service-oriented overnight team to recognize, resolve or refer problems that may occur with library users, library resources or basic technologies and equipment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
Represent the university and library at all times with service excellence and demonstrate a focus on student satisfaction and safety; demonstrate highly effective collaboration with staff from the library, Information Technology and Public Safety and with library student assistants (safety team); and consistently respect the diversity of those from all backgrounds.
Under the direction of the department’s manager, oversee the library’s spaces and coordinate the overnight student safety team to ensure a scholarly environment for Michigan Tech students, faculty and staff. Maintain library space use, conducive to their designated purposes, with diplomacy and tact.
Ensure the security of the building and the safety and comfort of Michigan Tech students, faculty and staff through established library policies, procedures and defined communication channels. Work cooperatively and effectively with Public Safety and outside safety entities when needed.
Staff the Library and IT Service Center desk and entrance and coordinate systematic building walk through, making note of general conditions and log problems, maintenance needs and use.
Explain policies and practices clearly: Will learn and understand the respective library and IT organizations, practices and procedures and will interpret policies for library users. Will learn and understand the role and responsibilities of Public Safety and will serve as the coordinator in emergency or evacuation procedures until the arrival of Public Safety and other safety entities. Will apply safety-related knowledge, skills and practices to everyday work.
Perform basic inquiry services: Maintain an understanding of library and IT services to answer basic questions and to refer more complex inquiries through virtual methods in order to expedite responses when the full-time staff arrives. Responsible for answering directional questions and provide assistance with the catalog, most popular library databases and services and will learn to navigate the library and IT websites. The ability to identify to whom and when to refer questions is essential. Duties must be performed courteously, accurately and in a timely manner.
Perform circulation services: Circulate, check-in and renew items in person and over the phone, including laptops and other convenience products. Manage group study room processes. Collect fees, fines and monies tendered. Maintaining confidentiality of user/patron files is essential. Duties must be performed courteously, accurately and in a timely manner.
Perform technical duties: Assist users with a variety of technologies and equipment including basic troubleshooting and explanation of printers, scanners, wireless network, micro format readers, and workstations. Assist users by resolving basic problems, refers more complex problems to appropriate staff, maintains status logs and may assist with cleaning. Duties must be performed courteously, accurately and in a timely manner.
Contribute to the training, coaching and direction of student assistants. As punctuality and reliability are essential to the overnight shift, may need to resolve staffing issues on an emergency basis.
Integrate safety practices into daily activities.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Functional coordination of student assistants as part of the overnight team.
Required Education (minimum requirements)
High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
Two years of demonstrated responsible work in a service organization or workplace in order to appropriately evaluate and resourcefully handle unforeseen situation or problems.
Must have track record for reliability and punctuality.
Possess basic computer skills including standard office applications and the ability to learn specialized software systems.
Ability to use general office equipment including telephones, scanners, computer workstations, printers and demonstrate their use to others.

Demonstrated commitment to a safe work environment.
Ability to understand and communicate library policies and procedures and maintain a commitment to identifying matters that must be referred to Public Safety or library administration.
Communication skills necessary to diplomatically, clearly and tactfully relate to students, faculty and staff and to other campus entities such as Public Safety.
Communication may be conducted via e-mail, telephone, and radio in addition to face to face.
Ability to exercise good judgment independently while recognizing when referrals should be made to Public Safety, Library Administration or 911.
Ability to recognize, resolve or refer problems involving library users or technical matters following established guidelines.
Willingness and ability to learn new information, methods or skills for library and technology support.

Language, Mathematical, and/or Reasoning Skills
LANGUAGE SKILLS : Ability to read and interpret documents such as publisher licenses and policies, user manuals and documentation. Ability to participate effectively with internal and external customers/colleagues using e-mail, listservs and vendor/publisher forums.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS : Ability to accurately perform arithmetic, use percentages and make projections.
REASONING ABILITY : Routinely apply common sense understanding to fulfill assignments and perform essential duties independently following policies and procedures. Resolve problems with good judgment and collegiality in a variety of workflow, financial and bibliographic situations.
Work Environment and/or Physical Demands
Physical Demands: Ability to hear speaking tones, use the telephone and two-way radios. Ability to keyboard/type; ability to read instructions; ability to lift up to 30lbs., ability to lift objects above the shoulders, climb up and down stairs; ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
Work environment: Environment can range from extremely busy to fairly quiet during which there are frequent interruptions and a variety of different requests or questions. As reliability is essential, must be able to work in inclement weather. This position is considered part of the essential services and required to report to work when the University is closed due to inclement weather.
