Provides customer service support and checks library materials in and out, maintains accurate customer account information in the library's database, and handles and tracks incomplete, damaged or missing library materials. Promotes the use of library materials and creates and maintains displays of library materials. Assists customers with routine queries, explains or interprets library policies and resolves customer issues. Works within established guidelines and requires considerable independence and initiative while performing duties.
Assists customers with checkout, processing transactions and resolving issues involving library cards and library materials at the Circulation Desk or in the Audiovisual area. (45%)
Ensures availability of library materials to customers by checking in returned items, pulling out expired reserve items from shelves, and shelving newly available reserved items in a timely manner. Provides assistance to customers in finding library materials, locating materials within Boise Public Library or in other area libraries as needed. (25%)
Promotes the use of the Library's collections by creating and maintaining appealing displays of library materials including CDs, DVDs, and new books. (10%)
Some positions serve as a lead Circulation staff member in the absence of the Supervisor and other support staff, directing workflow and resolving customer issues within established policies. (10%)
Performs background tasks such as updating and maintaining accurate customer account addresses in the library's database. Monitors overdue library items, handles or tracks incomplete, damaged, or missing library materials. (10%)

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
One year of experience in a library or related field providing customer service, explaining and interpreting policies and/or resolving conflicts and a high school diploma, GED or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Working knowledge of customer service techniques; standard library procedures and materials; basic computer operations and office terminology, procedures and equipment; library circulation processes and procedures.
Ability to learn and use automated library systems; work independently and use initiative while performing duties; exercise tact, patience, diplomacy and courtesy when dealing with patrons; carry out routine day-to-day activities within established guidelines and procedures; work at assigned times and work the entire shift; work weekends as assigned; display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public and other organizations; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Two years of experience providing customer service in a public library environment; working knowledge of library collections and reference materials, the Dewey decimal classification system as well as an understanding of a library relational database software system; skill in the use of basic software applications such as Word and Excel.

The noise level is occasionally loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, touch and feel. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, with areas of dust, odors, mist, gases or other airborne matter. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, and chemicals.
