Sorts, shelves and maintains library materials to ensure maximum availability for library patrons. Checks in returned materials and processes courier deliveries. Provides customer service to library patrons. Works with indirect supervision after initial training.
Sorts and shelves library materials in Dewey Decimal, alphabetical and/or chronological order. Maintains proper order of materials through frequent shelf-reading and straightening. Shifts books and other materials to avoid over crowding of shelves. Advises appropriate staff of items in disrepair as well as any other cataloguing issues that arise. (60%)
Processes courier deliveries and book drop materials. Retrieves returned library materials from the book drop. Checks in returned materials using library specific computer programs. Checks materials for completeness and damage and forwards to appropriate personnel as necessary. Sorts items for hold, transit or shelving. (20%)
Provides assistance to patrons by providing information and directions. Assists patrons with the on-line catalog, and self-checkout. Refers patrons to appropriate staff for in-depth questions or reader's advisory services. (10%)
Performs proper library opening and closing procedures. Performs clean up of library materials and public areas. Assists with designing and maintaining library displays. (10%)

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Working knowledge of basic computer functions and use of the mouse and keyboard.
Ability to compare numbers and names quickly and accurately; learn the Dewey Decimal System; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; provide good customer service; follow verbal and written instructions; display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public and other organizations; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Six or more months of experience performing customer service and shelving duties in a public library or similar setting; experience working with and providing information to people of all ages and backgrounds; knowledge of adult and children's literature; knowledge of library specific software.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 35 lbs and rarely lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. Also the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 101 + lbs. The noise level is occasionally loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, touch and feel. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, with areas of dust, odors, mist, gases or other airborne matter. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, and chemicals.
This position works: some weekends and will empty the bookdrop on holiday closures.
