WORK SCHEDULE: This seasonal position is required to work 15-20 hours per week for eight weeks starting on June 24.
· Hours may be scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
· The candidate must be able to attend mandatory training on June 21 and 22 and must be able to work the entire season.

CLASS DEFINITION
Perform lifeguard responsibilities while supervising aquatic programs and activities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
The Lifeguard works under the direct supervision of the Recreation Specialist.

Essential Duties:
  • Perform lifeguard responsibilities during swim sessions.
  • Assist the Swim Instructor/Lifeguard with swim instruction.
  • Promote the safety of all program participants by enforcing swimming pool rules and regulations.
  • Monitor facility use; open, close, and secure building for events; and assist in the supervision and preparation of the facility and amenities for patrons’ use.
  • Perform general administrative duties including: assist customers, collect fees, and maintain attendance records.
OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES
  • Administer CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and first aid as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Guidelines:

EXPERIENCE:
Previous aquatics/lifeguard experience is highly desirable.

SPECIAL MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT:
Must be at least 15 years of age at the time of appointment.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Basic principles and techniques of lifeguarding, CPR methods, and first aid.
  • Methods for keeping water and surrounding areas safe for public use.
  • Applicable safety precautions and procedures.
  • Customer service techniques.
REQUISITE ABILITIES:
  • Lead and work effectively with program participants.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, City officials, and the public.
  • Handling medical emergencies in a calm and effective manner; providing first aid, and CPR as needed.
  • Maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.
  • Communicate effectively, follow oral and written instructions.
  • Deal effectively and courteously with the public.
  • Learn, understand, and apply relevant policies and procedures.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:
  • Successful completion of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course.
  • Valid American Red Cross Standard First Aid certification.
  • Valid American Red Cross CPR certification.
PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed outside requiring prolonged standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, squatting, stooping, and bending; prolonged periods in the water; work on slippery and uneven surfaces; ability to lift, carry, and move objects totaling up to 100 pounds in weight; may be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals, as well as, blood and body fluids; including prolonged and extreme exposure to the sun; and have mobility, vision, hearing, and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.
