Salary: Lifeguard: $9.75 per hour, no benefits.

Hours: Flexible and varied hours.

Age Requirement: Minimum 16 years of age.

The principal function of an employee in this class is to ensure patron safety within the pool center facility. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, members of community service groups, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed at a pool facility.


1. Maintains a clean and safe swimming facility, including clearing pool deck of potentially dangerous objects and vacuuming pool when necessary.

2. Monitors the safety of the pool, including administering First-Aid and CPR when necessary, testing water quality and chemical balance, monitoring pool equipment, and performing minor maintenance repair as required.

3. Performs life-saving and guarding duties, including assisting patrons in life threatening situations, enforcing pool rules and regulations daily for the efficient and safe operation of the pool, providing active accident prevention, monitoring patrons to make sure they are physically capable to be in the water, and maintaining current certifications.

4. Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.

2. Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.

3. Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.

4. Is punctual and timely in meeting requirements of performance, including attendance standards and work deadlines.

5. Communicates information and states concerns in a clear and professional manner.

6. Respects the opinion of others and demonstrates a reasonable relationship with employees, supervisors and others.

7. Accepts and performs in a timely and effective manner changes in work assignments and/or how work is performed.


Thorough knowledge of swimming and lifeguard saving techniques.

Thorough knowledge of basic First-Aid and CPR.

Thorough knowledge of injury prevention and treatment.

Substantial knowledge of stabilization of victims with spinal cord injuries.

Ability to remain calm and act in a professional manner at all times.

Ability to differentiate between passive and active drowning victims.

Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with the general public.

Ability to address uncooperative patrons.

Ability to swim 500 yards using a variety of swim strokes.

Ability to retrieve objects off pool floor in timely manner.

Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.

Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language and deal with a wide range of persons.

Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions, use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions, and prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations.

Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks and the ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology

Some swimming training and experience; or any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

CPR Certification by the American Red Cross; First Aid Certification; and Lifeguard Certification.

Sufficient finger or manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation to enable the employee to operate a personal computer, telephone and related equipment.

Sufficient clarity of speech or other communication ability with or without reasonable accommodation to enable the employee to communicate effectively and convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly or quickly.

Sufficient clarity of hearing with or without reasonable accommodation to enable the employee to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.

Sufficient visual acuity or other power of observation with or without reasonable accommodation to enable the employee to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned; to make general observations of facilities and structures; to review a wide variety of materials in electronic or hard copy form and perform activities such as viewing a computer terminal; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection).

Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which enables the employee to efficiently perform lifeguard duties as required and function within a recreational pool facility environment. Medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to up to 20 lbs. of force frequently.
