The Salvation Army located at the Kroc Community Center in Dayton Ohio is looking for an individual to assist in the Education Department. We are looking for a highly energetic, motivated and creative person. This Literacy Specialist will take the lead in developing various learning opportunities for both students and adults within the Dayton metro area. This person will work in conjunction with the Director of Education to fully engage the state of the art facilities located within the New Kroc Community Center. We are looking for a person who can dream of the possibilities, develop an awareness of the barriers, and create an excellent learning environment.
o Pre and Post assessment and tracking of students engaged in literacy
o Tabulation and reporting of statistics related to literacy programs
o Develop curriculum / lesson plans for a variety of programs
o Work with the technology staff to maintain accurate and useful educational
websites for student use
o Work collaboratively with Education Center staff to develop afterschool
programs and field trips
o Instruct during the afterschool programs
o Development of literacy programs to be conducted throughout the
o Development of Family Literacy Program and special events related to
literacy (Family Literacy Fair)
o Assist in adult literacy program development and management (as deemed
necessary by need)
o Duties include developing relationships with Dayton Public Schools,
Neighborhood School Centers, Our Lady of Rosary, and others as
appropriate to encourage referrals to the center
o Visit Neighborhood School weekly to provide assistance in literacy programs
o Conduct or participate in workshops, committees, and conferences
designed to promote the intellectual, social, and physical welfare of students
and community members
o Relationship building among Salvation Army employees within the Education
Center will be an integral part of this role and on occasion working
collaboratively across departments
o Assist in working with UD students and faculty to provide literacy and math
interventions, mentor and train UD students; coordinate volunteer
schedules for these UD students
o Assessment and tracking of students engaged in literacy activities
o Tabulation and reporting of statistics related to literacy and math programs
o May work collaboratively with the drop in center teachers to develop
o Providing training and guidance to volunteers working on Literacy programs
in the building
o Research and analyze user and community needs to determine program
directions and goals
o A bachelor or master degree level literacy specialist with expertise in
reading and writing assessment, reading and writing intervention, literacy
materials selection and literacy programming.
o Qualified applicants should be experienced in Microsoft Office.
o Ability to investigate new technologies and tools for teaching and learning
and to quickly learn new systems.
o Flexibility in times scheduled including some Saturdays
o Ability to work some evenings, especially Tuesday through Thursday
evenings between 3:00 and 6:00 to support afterschool programs
o Experience with teaching or curriculum development.
o Enthusiasm and demonstrated capacity to interact with youth and teens.
o Organized out-of-the-box thinker who can develop additional tournaments,
events, and activities
