Business Unit: Crop Nutrients, Ames IA

Reports To: VP Crop Nutrients

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary: Responsible for management of company’s transportation function – inbound, outbound, bulk dry, liquid, and compressed gas by truck, rail, and barge; logistics operations, management of the Logistics Control Center and Terminal Operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Manages Logistics Control Center including all phases of transportation planning, management, and execution
  • Works hand-in-hand with Procurement to optimize net landed cost for United Suppliers and our customers
  • Manages Internal Trucking Company TEX Transportation
  • Manages 3 rd party carriers including vendor relationship management and compliance
  • Maintains inventory accuracy and compliance at Terminal Operations
  • Manages all P&L aspects of transportation, fertilizer terminals and production
  • Develops and manages metrics to gauge and improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • Develops and implements process changes that support business unit operating goals
  • Develops short and long-term logistics strategies to support United Supplier’s rapid growth
  • Oversees inbound and outbound logistics operations, terminal activities, and takes responsibility for safety and quality control
  • Analyzes the financial impact on total landed cost of proposed logistics changes, such as routing, shipping modes, volumes, etc.
  • Effectively collaborate with Sales, Procurement, and Accounting to integrate logistics with business systems and processes
  • Manages import execution and Customs compliance
  • Other projects or duties that may be assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities - Directly supervises Logistics Control Center Management; Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training managers; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance mid-year and annually; providing timely coaching and development; succession planning; addressing complaints and resolving problems; and fostering a continuous improvement culture.

Qualifications - To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Minimum Education and/or Experience - Bachelor’s Degree in Logistics, Transportation or Engineering; or 10 years Ag-related transportation and logistics work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Heavy Truck, Rail, and International Marine Dry Bulk experience is a plus, as well as exposure to Cross Gulf and/or Inland Dry Barge. P&L experience required. Experience in process improvement preferred, such as Lean/Six Sigma, TQM, Value Stream Mapping.

Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze and interpret written documents and information, general business periodicals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information accurately or speak clearly before diverse groups in a variety of settings. Listens to get clarification.

Mathematical Skills - Ability to apply concepts of basic math and algebra and calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, ratios, proportions, percentages, and volume. Capacity to create and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and achieve resolution; exhibits sound and accurate judgment.

Computer Skills - Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Must have knowledge and experience in Internet software; Inventory software, Order processing systems, Must have basic computer software understanding for accurate data entry and reporting .

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations - Current driver's license; driving record must meet company/insurance guidelines.

Other Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications - Strong and effective communication and organizational skills are essential. Must be able to multitask with several projects occurring at the same time. Must be able to travel 50% of the time or as required.
