The Louisiana State Director is responsible for representing The Trust for Public Land (TPL) and carrying out the mission of the organization in an effective, visionary and financially sound way. This position manages and mentors the transaction and program teams and administrative staff and works in close cooperation with the State Director of Philanthropy. The Louisiana Advisory Board advises the Director, who is responsible for its cultivation and growth. S/he is responsible for the vision and strategic direction of the Office; oversight of state and local government relations; public finance strategies and implementation; coordination of the acquisition of real estate for conservation purposes in the state and its conveyance to public agencies or other nonprofit organizations. This position will develop and maintain relationships for the benefit of TPL with state leaders in philanthropic institutions and individuals; government; land and resource-related businesses; the environmental/conservation communities and the media. The Director has the primary responsibility for the coordination of marketing TPL and prospecting for new programmatic investments and philanthropic opportunities.

Essential Functions

40% Transaction/Program Work: The State Director will be responsible for generating, leading and completing conservation real estate transactions that generate substantial financial support for the department and organization. The State Director’s project portfolio should be at a high level of complexity, visibility, mission delivery and financial support. S/he will be responsible for building urban programs around open space and parks.

25% Philanthropy: Working in close coordination with the divisional philanthropy staff, this position will lead in the cultivation and solicitation of major gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations. S/he will actively assist philanthropy staff in the creation and implementation of a fundraising plan, including the establishment and achievement of an annual philanthropy budget for the LAMSARK Office.

The State Director will manage and/or modify the existing Louisiana Advisory Board and the Office’s networks of volunteers and supporters for TPL’s work. S/he will work with transaction and philanthropy staff in the formation of Gift Opportunities and ensure coordination between communications, philanthropy, transaction and government affairs functions.

20% Management/Administration: S/he supervises transaction, program and administrative staff and is ultimately responsible for the LAMSARK Office budget. S/he is responsible for creating a positive working environment, strong staff morale and a culture of teamwork and mutual support.

10% Conservation Strategy: The State Director is responsible, in collaboration with other appropriate staff, for developing, integrating and implementing statewide conservation strategies, including an annual strategic plan. This plan will evaluate and identify new business opportunities, programs and markets, particularly those that are statewide or larger landscapes. Examples could include a cohesive and strategic approach to climate change, water, urban work, and working landscapes.

5% Marketing/Government Affairs: Working with national and divisional marketing staff as well as others, the State Director has a primary role in establishing broad name appeal in representing TPL around the state. The Director works closely with federal governmental affairs staff and the transaction and program teams to help coordinate TPL’s federal and state government affairs strategy, and helps to cultivate relationships with key elected officials and their staff, and with federal, state and other public agency personnel.


A college education, preferably an advanced degree.

At least 5 years experience in real estate

At least 8 years of relevant non-profit work experience, including not less than 5 years of demonstrably successful management experience.

Extensive fundraising experience.

Excellent leadership and communication skills.

Familiarity with conservation real estate practices, land conservation policy issues, public finance techniques, government funding practices and procedures, the foundation community, fundraising, marketing practices, best management practices and budgeting practices.

Experience in creating and executing urban programs to develop open space and parks

An entrepreneurial spirit, initiative, energy, the capacity to lead, mentor and inspire others, the capacity to be both a high performer and a team player, common sense and a sense of humor.

Experience in public speaking.

An ability and willingness to travel as required and to work flexible hours outside a 9-5 schedule.
