This is an entry-level HVAC position. Responsibilities of this position include performance of a variety of skilled tasks in the HVAC trade. Work will be performed independently under the supervision of an HVAC supervisor and will be evaluated through effective and efficient equipment operation. The selected candidate will work individually or with other HVAC mechanics to perform preventive maintenance repairs on HVAC systems, refrigeration systems, heating systems, and ventilation systems and to change filter medium in campus-wide air handlers. Duties will also include testing and adding chemicals to water-side HVAC systems and completing work orders as assigned by the HVAC Supervisor. Physical effort will be expended in the form of extensive walking, climbing, and lifting.
The ideal candidate will possess skills in all aspects of HVAC work, including the installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling systems, chilled water distribution systems, and pneumatic, electronic, and computer control systems. Candidates should be able to interpret blue prints, equipment installation instructions, and reference manuals. Computer, electrical, and variable speed drive experience is desired. Advanced training at a technical school or community college is preferred. Prefer one year of progressive experience in the performance of tasks associated with the assigned trades areas or an equivalent combination of education and experience and certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III, or Universal Technician as required by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F.
Normal work hours will be from 8:00am to 5:00pm; however, temporary adjustments to this routine schedule will be necessary during summer operation and scheduled events. Work schedules of tradespersons may be altered in cases of work that requires off-normal-hour scheduling with the possibility of emergency call-in. Candidates should possess a valid NC driver's license and be eligible to operate a state-owned vehicle in accordance with the ECU property policy.
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
