DEPARTMENT: Clinical Laboratory SUPERVISOR'S TITLE: Clinical Laboratory Manager or Supervisor TITLES SUPERVISED: N/A TOTAL NUMBER OF FTE'S DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY SUPERVISED: 0 PURPOSE OF POSITION: To perform and communicate routine and complex laboratory procedures and analysis in accordance with established procedures and policies for the Clinical Laboratories of a Medical Center dedicated to the care of infants, children and adolescents. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Bachelors degree in clinical laboratory science, biological or physical science. MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent For new Medical Technology program graduates - successful completion of certification within six months of hire date For new biological or physical science program graduates - successful completion of certification within 18 months of hire date Associates degree, appropriate experience and equivalent certification such as AAB certification Preferred: Minimum of two years experience in a clinical laboratory

Responsibilities

·PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
Maintain currency in the field, including maintenance of any necessary licensure/certification through continuing education, conferences, meetings, in-services, networking, literature, and/or seminars. Attend all mandatory CCHMC training sessions. Implement obtained knowledge/skills into ones own work, the department, and/or the organization. Assume responsibility for one's own professional growth and development. May participate in internal/external professional committees, agencies, councils and/or activities.

·COMMUNICATION:
Identify technical and patient related problems or discrepancies. Notify appropriate laboratory personnel and assist with investigation and documentation of the resolution. Report and documents results accurately, completely and in a timely basis. Report problems and assist appropriate personnel with troubleshooting and documentation of the resolution. Provides excellent customer service to all internal and external customers. Consistently provides concise communications for interdepartmental hand-off of data.

·PATIENT TESTING:
Able to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Medical lab Technician. Perform assigned technical procedures in the section; follow standard operating protocols. Operate instruments; perform performance checks, calibrations, preventive maintenance, basic troubleshooting from written guidelines. Perform and report Quality Control procedures. Identifies Q.C. failures. Performs analytic method range (AMR) analysis, interpretation and recommendation for implementation or additional analysis. Serve as shift charge technologist to ensure all technical department testing is complete. Assumes troubleshooting responsibilities for inter/intra departmental problems that might arise. Escalates to medical director/lab administrator on-call where appropriate. Prepare sample for analysis. Store and preserve specimen. Prepare reagents, assist with the monitoring supply inventories, receive and stock supplies. Perform registration, phlebotomy and catheterization as required by location. Perform routine procedures within respective discipline, including the collection and analysis of data which will affect decisions regarding patient care. Rotate weekend and holiday schedules as required. Cover shifts other than scheduled when below minimum staffing or heavy workload.

·DEVELOPMENTAL SUPPORT:
Conduct, direct or assist in special projects, evaluations, experiments or research. Participate in regularly schedule cross trained rotation and demonstrate continued competency in various sections of the Clinical Laboratory. Participate in improving organizational performance through recommending areas or approaches for improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data and providing input to department discussions. Participate in establishing job requirements and goals; perform duties at the desired level of competency. Trains new employees and students on technical benches.

Maintain/Manage strong working relationships with clients, colleagues, and other key stakeholders. Respond to requests quickly and effectively. Identify and understand customer needs and expectations and meet them. Communicate any relevant information to clients, colleagues, and other key stakeholders.

Participate in improving organizational performance through recommending areas or approaches for improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data and providing input to department discussions. Ensures that work areas are organized and present a safe, accessible, effective and efficient environment. Maintain currency in all departmental policies, procedures, standards and job descriptions. Attends required Cincinnati Children's training sessions, including radiation safety, laboratory safety, blood borne pathogens and OSHA.
