This position is located at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan (CMHIFL). CMHIFL is a 94 bed psychiatric facility located in Denver that is dedicated to meeting the needs of the community by providing mental health treatment to all age populations in the metro area. The mission of CMHIFL is to provide the highest quality mental health services to persons of all ages with complex, serious and persistent mental illness within the resources available.

Summary of duties:

***This position is Per Diem on the Nursing Float Pool and will be required to work multiple shifts***

This is an “as needed” position works on the Nursing Float Pool with the expectation that they provide coverage on all four treatment teams for planned and precipitous nursing staff vacancies due to acuity, injury, illness or extended leave status.

This position exists to provide therapeutic work in the psychiatric care of mentally ill patients hospitalized at the CMHIFL. Duties included maintaining a therapeutic environment and monitoring group climate by providing input at treatment planning sessions, case conferences and related meetings as well as participating in identifying client problems and in establishing approaches to client treatment, providing one-to-one counseling, delivering direct nursing care and teaching daily living skills and supervising daily activities, acting as patient advocate by giving support and education on patient rights and resolving or referring patient rights issues. Responds to crisis situations by adhering to nursing standards and hospital policies and procedures as well as detecting and correcting safety violations in patient care areas. Performs other duties as assigned.

Work environment: Sometimes difficult customers/patients, locked units, interactive, fast-paced, dynamic, team-oriented, requirement to make immediate and critical decisions, and a high level of accountability for patient care. High level of professional responsibility for the employee to maintain updated skills, knowledge, abilities and competencies necessary to the position through continuing education, clinical supervision, literature review and participating in discipline and team development.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions and Conditions of Employment:

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in human services and one year full time professional experience providing therapeutic and related services to mental health patients in a mental health setting. This experience must be clearly documented on your application. Part-time experience will be pro-rated.


Professional work experience that focused on the specific experience described above, demonstrating the competencies equivalent to the competencies learned through completion of the required education may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis. Sixty semester hours, or a bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, social work, behavioral science, clinical mental health, nursing, mental health, child development, or human services may substitute for the associate's degree and one year of experience. A copy of college or university transcripts must be provided to verify education.

Preferred Competencies:

PC1 - Inpatient direct care in a psychiatric locked/secure setting
PC2 - Outpatient mental health experience (running groups, case management etc.,)
PC3 - College or university education in nursing, psychology, sociology, human services, or education
PC4 - Certifications and/or trade workshops, and professional development directly related to psychiatric mental health

  • Must have no felony convictions or history of domestic violence,

Selection Process:

The selection process will consist primarily of a review of applications against the minimum and preferred qualifications of this position. Applications will also be reviewed in comparison to all others in the applicant pool in order to identify a top group of candidates. That top group may be invited to a structured interview process if necessary. A top group of up to six (6) candidates will be invited to the final interview stage of the process.
