Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Plant Operations and through cross functional interaction with support managers, has responsibility for the tactical operations of the plant’s production, quality, service goals, and objectives. Has Team Leaders and possibly hourly positions reporting directly to this position. This position has responsibility for leading the production teams, ensuring compliance with both manufacturing and non-manufacturing policies, production targets and quality standards; forecasting of labor and facilities requirements. Position is responsible for directing production and distribution of products. Implements and sustains process improvement initiatives utilizing lean manufacturing methodologies.

Improve manufacturing cycle time, and productivity while reducing waste, total errors, and manufacturing cost of the check manufacturing plants. Sets objectives, tracks results, and plans strategies to meet or exceed operational objectives. This position manages training, motivation, and evaluation of production team members in the plant. Works with manufacturing leaders in other Harland Clarke plants to ensure consistency in manufacturing processes and procedures.

Represents the plant in the absence of the Director of Plant Operations.

Key Duties / Responsibilities

Provides leadership in accordance with the Harland Clarke Manufacturing Work System and facilitates the development of direct reports.

Delegate projects and tasks to line staff, and provide coaching to line staff.

Participates or leads company level process improvement/project teams.

Communicates goals, objectives and results to manufacturing teams.

Performs Leader Standard Work for this level of leadership (reviewing trend charts, verify leader standard work being performed in manufacturing teams, weekly Gemba walk, etc.)

Plans, staffs and measures performance of productivity, quality and service of the manufacturing location against established goals and priorities.

Incorporates support groups appropriately in plans for improvement and response to problems.
Review and take action on current results and reports.

Monitor and correct any personnel issues.

Coordinate training and development of management and hourly staff.

Schedule production work flow.

Education & Knowledge Required
Bachelor’s degree preferred
Experience / Skills / Abilities Required
Min 2 - 6 years Leadership experience and 2 - 5 years Manufacturing experience

Models exceptional leadership behaviors, including customer and results driven, ethical, supportive and caring, passionate, accountable, and collaborative. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes software. Able to balance the needs of the business, the customer , and the employees, strong Leadership skills, able to manage both salaried and hourly employees, able to manage multiple processes and product lines. Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills required, conflict resolution and employee relations skills. Must be able to lead utilizing lean manufacturing principles and within the framework of High Performance Work Systems. Must have the ability to interact effectively with all Harland Clarke employees, from hourly to CEO.

Supervisory Responsibility
Team Leaders (typically 3 - 6 leaders) and hourly employees.

Communication & Contacts Required
Communication with all Plant personnel, internal/external customers and vendors. Represents plant on company level manufacturing and project teams. Frequent contact with VP Manufacturing and VP Engineering.

Decision Making
Succession Planning, Employee Relations, Production Scheduling, actions to satisfy customer requirements, quality, reporting, staffing, technology, process improvement, and technology changes.
