Summary of Job Content:
Sets up and operates numeric controlled lathes and mills, as well as conventional machines (including tracers) to machine rocket motor components, nozzle assemblies, and other flight hardware; carbon/carbon composites and tooling; carbon/carbon brakes, clutches and racing prototypes; developmental components and assemblies; and other composite hardware as required. Concept and fabricate tooling (metal and composite) for layup, machining and assembly fixtures using conventional and numeric control machines and machining procedures. Setup and operate conventional and numeric control lathes and mills as required.

Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.

Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.

Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.

Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

Performs periodic preventive maintenance on all tools and equipment in production area.

Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.

Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications using standard measuring equipment and/or automated probing capability, as applicable.

Operates hand routers and other hand tools as required.

Collect and report process data such as setup and run time, dimensional plotting and tracking; input recordings into statistical process control charts, recognizing and reporting trends and process variations.

Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.

Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated.

Confers with engineers, production personnel, numeric control programmers, nc machinists, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

Preferred Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required plus 1 year post-high school technical education/certification, and 1 year experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires the ability to read, interpret, analyze, and solve problems associated with the essential job functions. Requires math skills necessary to set up and precisely operate numeric controlled and conventional machine shop equipment; includes math through basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Must be able to identify and act upon common composites process variables toward the elimination of defects.

Must be able to efficiently function in a self directed work team environment.

Must have experience with 5-axis machines.
