The Ventura County Star, Ventura County ’s leading newspaper and web site, has an opening in Operations for a Mailroom Supervisor to advance the success of our newspaper, niche products, and web offerings. This person must be available to work night shift.
This postion supervises the packaging department and is responsible for insert package and bundling production of daily newspaper and all other printed products.
Assigns and checks work flow from press delivery through packaging to meet assigned deadlines and quality standards for all packages.
Working with the Packaging Manager, directs activities of and assigns work to all employees in the unit; hires, instructs, evaluates performance, disciplines, commends and dismisses within the packaging department.
Responsible for training the work force to maintain a well-rounded and capable crew. Manages/resolves employee conflicts and assists with any other department issues.
Conducts monthly packaging department safety meeting. Implements preventive measures and recommendations of company Executive Safety Committee.
Works hands-on with packaging operators, is a fully capable operator and has full understanding of all packaging department equipment, job duties and requirements.
Keeps packaging production area safe, clean, and organized. Properly handles waste disposal (used oils, plastics & solid wastes).
Working with the Packaging Manager, assigns and schedules work to produce the best quality product possible. Maintains quality control and insert security standards.
Along with the Packaging Manager, responsible for package planning and zoning of daily inserts into the appropriate day's package.
Ensures that all equipment is maintained properly through daily, weekly, and monthly documented preventive maintenance in order that optimum performance can be expected and achieved.
Assists Packaging Manager with inventory of strapping, Kraft bundle toppers, Kraft bottom wrap, and other packaging related supplies while minimizing waste.
Correctly handles recyclable materials to receive best overall recovery of salvageable materials.
Foster good relations between the packaging department and other departments.
Keeps abreast of all new packaging production methods and materials available to further improve productivity and quality.
Handles all other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience/Certifications
Generally, minimum of seven years newspaper packaging experience, including one year in management positions or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have forklift certification.
Must have excellent knowledge of the newspaper insert and packaging process including package planning/zoning, quality control, and preventive maintenance.
Must have familiarity with OSHA requirements applicable to the packaging production area and have experience with safety programs.
Skills & Abilities
Excellent problem solving and basic math skills.
Excellent people skills. Must be able to work well and constantly communicate (both written and verbally) with frontline employees as well as middle and upper management.
Must be able to work in a fast paced environment and meet all deadlines.
Must have solid organizational and computer skills including good working knowledge of software programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
Must understand how to manage departmental expense budgets.
Must be able to operate and have solid understanding of all material handling equipment including forklifts, clamp trucks, walk behind lifts, pallet jacks, etc.
Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
Must be able to repeatedly and for long periods of time lift and load stacks of insert products into packaging machinery.
Exposure to paper dust.
Exposure to constant machine noise.
Repeated lifting of up to 25 pounds and frequent lifting of 25 to 50 pounds.
