DESCRIPTION

Work within the Catered Living department to assist elderly residents with an assortment of tasks that fall outside of the normal maintenance or housekeeping duties. The handyman will perform various odd jobs such as hanging pictures, assembling furniture, and general resident assistance as needed.

DUTIES

1. Must be able to plan, organize, and manage assigned work orders to achieve greatest productivity and work efficiency with safety and quality of work being highest priority.

2. Must demonstrate and apply critical thinking skills as identified in "a." and "b" below:

a. Will have proper tools and supplies, within reason, when responding to work orders.

b. Must think about the responding work order at hand and be prepared for the assignment.

3. Required to keep work area neat, clean and safe at all times. Goal is to leave the work order area clean or cleaner than when work started. It is everyone's responsibility to clean as you go.

4. Must comply with all safety rules and general policy and procedures for both the client and Vanguard.

5. Responsible for insuring tools are accounted for at all times and maintained in good working order. Personal assigned tools that are missing will be reported immediately by person who tool was assigned to. Inventory of tools will be spot checked by management to ensure compliance.

6. Required to work alone unless work order requires additional help. Consideration will be given for technicians working together when it involves training for specific tasking or when safety is a concern. Technician must get approval from supervisor when additional help is required for specific tasking or training. If not sure, ask your supervisor.

7. Work in conjunction with other departments and outside contractors to ensure resident needs are met in a timely matter.

8. Have the ability to perform a wide variety of tasks including, but not limited to, minor residential upgrades to residence, jumpstarting vehicles, personal gardening and landscaping, hanging decorations, and various resident request within their homes, etc.

9. Have the ability to record time spent on tasks to ensure accurate invoicing.

10. Signs out and in and observes key control policy designed to insure resident security and privacy.

11. Promptly informs Supervisor of any changes in resident lifestyle that may indicate the need for senior staff intervention.

12. Promptly reports any concerns regarding resident and employee health or safety, and facility needed repairs or housekeeping to Supervisor.

Physical/Environmental Demands:
Must be able to crawl and work in ceiling spaces and other cramped areas and exposure to all types of weather conditions which includes extreme cold and hot temperatures and rainy conditions. Ability to perform heavy physical work, lifting 75 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds and performing many tasks having to climb a ladder. Must be able to work around animals as needed.

Must be able to withstand following daily routine: Standing: 2 to 6 hours walking: 1 to 2 hours sitting: 2 to 6 hours bending: 0 to 1 hour, Squatting: 9 to 3 hours

QUALIFICATIONS

Must display tact, respect, courtesy, and patience with residents and maintain a professional demeanor and appearance in interactions with residents, family members, visitors, co-workers, supervisors and others.

Must possess strict honesty, confidentiality and integrity, and be even tempered and display good work habits.

Must be able to speak, read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions in English. Be able to work independently or under limited supervision to complete tasks promptly, effectively, and efficiently within assigned schedules and according to established standards.

The qualified candidate should be able to prioritize efficiently and work in a timely manner.

The handyman should also be highly organized as he or she will be expected to maintain good records of receipts, invoices and tools. Confidential information is sometimes shared with the technician such as charge accounts, credit/debit cards and gift cards, therefore the technician should have the utmost discretion.

High school diploma or equivalent.
