DESCRIPTION

The Maintenance Technician - I, under supervision, maintains and makes repairs to buildings, related structures and pertinent equipment therein; operates and maintains a variety of equipment or vehicles used in the operation of the Zoo and the Belle Isle Nature Zoo and performs related work as required.

DUTIES

Building Trades:
Performs a variety of building maintenance and construction tasks that require skills associated with one or more related fields (including but not limited to: carpentry, bricklaying, plastering, painting, glazing, plumbing, steamfitting, roofing, sheet metal, refrigeration, electrical).

May be required from time to time to assist in miscellaneous duties such as clean-up of buildings and grounds, and other related duties as determined by supervision / management.

Such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.

Working Conditions:
Work under conditions including adverse weather, outside environment and heights.

Physical Requirements:
Physical work is a primary part of the job: walking, standing, stooping, kneeling and bending for long periods of time; must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.

QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a four-year high school, trade, or vocational high school; or GED.

Specific knowledge, skills, and background in one or more of the following areas: plumbing, electrical, building mechanics, building trades worker, construction equipment operator.

Knowledge of the methods, tools, materials, and equipment used.

Mechanical aptitude; industry and initiative in handling problems.

Willingness to learn and perform any assigned task.

Tact in dealing with others.

Physically and mentally capable of performing all the duties of the position.

Required to provide the tools necessary to perform the work assigned.
