VDOT's Bristol District has a job opening for a Maintenance Crew Member at its Dryden Gap Area Headquarters in Lee County. The selected individual will perform a combination of skilled equipment operation, preventive maintenance and manual labor. Equipment operation includes but is not limited to backhoes, dump trucks, tractors and similar equipment. As an essential employee, selected individual must work during and after normal working hours when needed for emergency conditions.

Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures. Demonstrated experience in equipment operation and performing preventive maintenance thereof. Knowledge of Safety policies, procedures, and programs. Skilled in the operation and maintenance of hand-held and power tools as well as the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair. Ability to routinely perform heavy manual labor. Ability to read / follow oral and written instructions. Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements. Frequent travel is required.
High school graduate or equivalent. Experience in maintenance and/or construction of roadways.
Ability to routinely perform heavy manual labor, including but not limited to, standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 pounds in placement and removal of materials used in maintenance operations such as asphalt,concrete, stone pipe installation, debris/tree removal, etc. Ability to obtain flagger and work zone certifications. References, work history, and DMV records will be verified. Selected applicant must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screening. Fingerprint-based background check required. Requires approved safety shoes. Will be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies, inclement weather, and heavy traffic conditions.
