The purpose of the class is to perform semi-skilled and unskilled work in the maintenance and/or construction of County roads and drainage systems; to drive and operate trucks; to maintain assigned equipment, and to perform other work as required. This class works according to set procedures under close supervision.

Duties:

Performs semi-skilled and unskilled work in the construction and maintenance of County roads, driveways, sidewalks and curbs, rights-of-way, stormwater drainage systems and facilities.

May operate dump trucks and light trucks, back hoe, rollers, tractors, mowers, ditch digger, stump cutter, etc.; uses hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required.

Manually loads / unloads materials onto vehicles.

Stakes out, clears and grades areas for road construction.

Constructs and repairs roads.

Installs and cleans drainage pipes, gutters, culverts, catch basins, ditches, ponds and other drainage structures.

Keeps roads, ditches and rights-of-way clean and free of debris; removes fallen trees and animal carcasses from roadways and other areas.

Performs routine concrete work.

May operate spray truck for mosquito control in assigned County areas.

Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.

Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.

Assists co-workers with various duties as required.

Attends training, meetings, etc., as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.

Performs other duties as required.

All County employees are considered public servants for the citizens of Dorchester County. When requested before, during, or after an emergency event, County employees are expected to work and serve the public in coping with the emergency.

Qualifications:

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION :

Requires high school diploma, GED equivalent or specialized vocational training.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES :

Must possess a valid state driver’s license; CDL is desirable.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :

Requires over six months and up to and including one year.
