An employee in this class performs a variety of unskilled maintenance tasks maintaining public grounds and related facilities. Work involves general landscape maintenance such as mowing grass, weed eating, edging, pruning, planting trees and shrubs, fertilizing and general clean-up activities. Work also involves custodial task, painting, and moving furniture. Work requires the employee to use various hand tools, small motorized equipment and riding and push mowers. Work involves the performance of varied tasks requiring familiarity with and some competence in basic trade practices. Much of the work is carried out in accordance with established maintenance schedules; however, specific instructions and close supervision are received on new and special assignments. Employee must have the ability to execute details of work according to specific instructions and be able to adapt to frequent and varying changes in the work schedule. Employee is subject to hazards associated with grounds maintenance work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Custodial work subjects the employee to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated by observation and in terms of the efficiency with which assigned tasks are completed.
Examples of Duties:
Mows lawns; trims and edges around walkways, flower beds and fences; operates and maintains lawn mowers and some power and hand tools; cleans parking lots and walk ways.
Picks-up trash and debris and hauls to appropriate area and/or receptacle.
Plants trees, bushes, shrubs, flowers, grasses and other plants; seeds and sods athletic fields and other areas.
Maintains, by way of pruning, weeding, irrigating and cutting, etc: trees, bushes, shrubs, grasses and other plants.
Performs a variety of custodial task including dusting and cleaning desks and furniture; sweeping, stripping, waxing, mopping, and buffing floors; shampooing carpets; cleans windows, walls, woodwork and light fixtures; empties trash receptacles and replaces burned out light bulbs and ceiling tiles.
Inspects buildings for safety or maintenance problems and addresses or reports problems.
Paints or stains walls, woodwork, cabinets, tables, parking lots and sidewalks.
Operates light to medium sized motorized equipment; hauls gravel and dirt; operates blade on tractor to scrape roads; operates bush hog attachment to clear right-of-ways.
Makes minor repairs and performs preventative maintenance to motorized equipment.
Operates a variety of hand and specialty tools associated with the landscaping trade fields, fence repair and other minor repairs.
Sprays pesticides and chemicals under direction and guidance of a certified applicator.
Moves and re-arranges furniture.
Exercises water valves, flags traffic for utility maintenance or construction crews.
Graduation from high school and some experience in grounds maintenance and/or landscaping work, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
