DUTIES:
(The duties described reflect the full performance level of this position)

The position is located at the U.S. Botanic Garden, Operations Division. The incumbent performs intermediate level duties in Air Conditioning, Boiler Plant and Pipefitting trade occupations.

Specific duties include routine and common tasks following clear-cut instructions. Assists in the installation, alteration, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of the various high and low pressure piping systems throughout the Botanic Garden including the domestic water distribution system, fire sprinkler system, drain, waste and vent systems, and irrigation systems, and fountain display systems.

Assists with the repair and maintenance of greenhouse equipment and structures including greenhouse production systems, glass, and other growing areas. Assists with horticultural exhibitions, displays, special events, and educational features which includes helping in the design, fabrication, installation, transportation, maintenance, cleaning, and removal of exhibits.
Conducts preventive maintenance, assists with construction projects, and sweeps and cleans the shop and other work areas. Operates and performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance on trucks and other grounds maintenance motorized and non-motorized equipment, which may include mowers, tractors, blowers, tillers, augers, cultivators, handheld power gardening tools.

Installs and services power sources of cooling units; examines system for proper operation, and replaces worn and broken parts; tests the units or systems to ensure that air is conditioned or equipment is repaired according to standards and codes.

Assists in the operation, repair and maintenance of gas, refuse derived fuel (RDF), wood, oil, coal fired power boilers, and auxiliary equipment with manual or automatic controls to produce saturated or superheated steam or high temperature hot water. Regulates fuel feed and water levels and maintains required steam pressure and temperatures. Replenishes chemical feed tanks and monitors feed water-conditioning equipment to control or remove impurities and entrapped gases.
