Provides mail delivery services and periodic custodial duties in the care and maintenance of County buildings/facilities for the Department of General Services. Work involves distributing postal incoming and outgoing mail, packages and/or internal communications to multiple departments within the organization; secures facilities upon close of business; performs janitorial functions such as sweeping, mopping, washing walls and fixtures, etc.; performs physically strenuous activities such as moving furniture, heavy floor stripping, and operating waxing and buffing equipment. Duties fluctuate slightly within the job title according to assignment and specific needs. Employee must exercise some independent judgment in completion of assigned tasks and provide excellent customer service.

Special Duties & Responsibilities:


Sweeps, strips, waxes, buffs, mops and vacuums floor surfaces.

Cleans and disinfects restrooms; replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary.

Cleans windows, walls, woodwork and light fixtures.

May clean jail cells and treatment plants, removing trash, sweeping and mopping floors.

Sets up and breaks down conference rooms for meetings, arranging furniture as requested.

Empties trash receptacles.

Cleans door mats.

Cleans, dusts, and polishes tables and other furniture.

Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.

Gathers cans, bottles, and newspapers from designated boxes for recycling.

Gathers white paper and computer papers for recycling.

Washes windows, as needed.

Picks up mail at post office, sorts and delivers various departments' mail; delivers mail to the post office.

Delivers copy paper to County offices.

Secures and locks building at appropriate times; unlocks buildings.


May perform landscaping maintenance duties such as mowing the grass, picking up trash and debris, raking leaves, etc.

Stocks cleaning supplies.

Prepares coffee.

Raises and lowers the flag.

May take deposits to the bank; may deliver payroll checks.

Retrieves and delivers documents to various departments.

Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Training & Experience:

Some experience in custodial work with some experience in the use of heavy floor stripping, waxing, and buffing equipment preferred or any equivalent combination of training/experience. Knowledge of shipping and mailing policies for private carriers (UPS, FedEx, and the United States Postal Service) helpful. Position requires a valid Virginia Driver's License and is required to wear safety shoes.
