Provides leadership and management of the Corporate Relations Department. Oversees the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive marketing, communications and public relations strategies for internal and external audiences to support Company strategic goals and ensure positive relationships with its employees, customers, legislators, regulators and other audiences. Oversees the development and implementation of the Company's branding and advertising strategies. Works with senior management to help Company prepare for and manage issues through planning and clear, concise and credible communications, including technical writing and interpretation of Company financial results and regulatory matters. Serves as an important communications link between Senior Management and all other Company employees. Fundamental Responsibilities: * Anticipates, analyzes, plans for and manages critical company issues, including rate increase requests, financial results, engineering projects and other technical matters. Develops detailed understanding of political, community, media and technical issues to formulate and implement Issues Management strategies and contribute to company policymaking. Supervises, directs, coordinates and monitors the development and implementation of Issues Management strategies. Participates on various corporate task forces to provide communications/public relations perspectives on company projects with public/community interest. * Oversees and directs development and implementation of company branding and advertising functions to enhance corporate image, improve customer satisfaction and achieve other corporate goals. Ensures consistency and follow through of brand standards in all company communications. * Oversees and directs development and implementation of various communications tactics including: > Media responses, serving as a company spokesperson as required > Preparation of speeches and other communication materials for Company President and other executives > Preparation of reports and testimony on complex and technical issues under review by County, State and Federal legislative bodies > Consultative communication services to MECO, HELCO, HEI and its affiliates * Manages and administers all department personnel matters including attracting, motivating and developing department employees, supervising work schedules, conducting performance appraisals, setting individual performance goals, reviewing and managing department budget. Sets and follows through on attainment of department goals. Acts on behalf of the VP, Corporate Relations when required. Knowledge Requirements: * Expert knowledge of journalism and public relations. Expert knowledge of marketing and advertising. * Expert knowledge of communications/information dissemination techniques. * Technical knowledge of company operations, utility industry operations, and basic familiarity with the varying communities the Company serves. * Knowledge of utility ratemaking and regulatory concepts and process. * Technical understanding of issues facing Company and industry. * Technical experience in print production, including layout and design principles and techniques. * Technical knowledge of finance and accounting concepts. * Working knowledge of budgeting and forecasting processes. * Working knowledge of federal, state economic, business and political climates. * Technical knowledge of communications technology, including working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications. * Basic understanding of other visual communications (e.g., video) processes. * Basic knowledge of and ability to apply good photographic techniques. * Working knowledge of local news media Skills Requirements: * Ability to team build, think critically and manage, motivate and lead employees, including ability to handle difficult personnel matters with both firmness and sensitivity. * Ability to handle difficult and/or sensitive issues while using tact, courtesy and discretion. Demonstrates interpersonal and political savvy to navigate through internal and external organizational networks. * Ability to translate complex issues into terms understandable by a broad range of audiences. * High proficiency in writing and editing. * High proficiency in applying customer research and a detailed understanding of Company goals and issues in the development of Company marketing, advertising and other communications strategies. * Excellent oral, facilitation and presentation skills, including ability to think on one's feet and respond to media and customer inquiries in clear, credible and concise terms. * Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and to assess, communicate and adapt to rapidly changing priorities. * Analytical and conceptual skills to assess issues, to recommend proper actions and to coordinate implementation of actions. * Organizational skills to supervise many concurrent projects and programs. * Ability to work well with people at all levels and from diverse departments in the company. Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team. * Ability to act as a liaison between Senior Management and other employees in the company. Experience Requirements: * Multiple (10+) years in communications work, preferably in corporate communications or as a public relations consultant, or professional journalist with an emphasis on experience in writing and issues analysis and management, including management of issues in politically sensitive environments or complex organizations. * Multiple (5+) years in marketing and advertising, preferably for large organizations with complex public issues * Multiple (7+) years in publications editing or training. * Preferably several (3-5+) years in utility planning or utility communications. * Preferably a few (1-2+) years in budget planning and monitoring.
