The position works closely with operations management, Sales, R&D and support functions such as legal, regulatory affairs, and risk management in order to create and launch corporate-wide programs, management of the EHS data and information systems, and overall governance programs for the company. The position requires the establishment of relationships with governmental agencies and external associations in order to anticipate, track, and communicate regulatory activity with regulatory requirements and changes that might generate financial liabilities or impact operational status. This position includes project management, the supervision of external consultants and internal associates on a routine basis.
Key Work Performed
Manage global Industrial Hygiene program for all Scotts facilities. Manage annual monitoring through third party vendor, processing and tracking invoices, managing timelines and identifying cost saving opportunities,
Lead the creation and maintenance of all global EHS policies, standards, guidance documents, checklists and other information.
Acquire and maintain a working knowledge and understanding of the EHS aspects and impacts associated with company operations in order to establish, monitor and track metrics to support and monitor ongoing EHS compliance across the company. Prepare reports and communicate to site management, business unit and corporate personnel.
Participate in the review of new projects, sites, and research initiatives to ensure proper implementation of company EHS programs and policies.
Key health and safety contact for all New Material Approvals.
Manage the company’s global EHS information management system, recordkeeping system and internal web-page.
Monitor legislation and regulations, review and interpret new and proposed regulations for applicability, assist with the development of associated implementation and training programs and procedures.
Identify data management needs and develop metrics for trending and benchmarking. Participate in professional industry groups to further develop individual capabilities and to benchmark company EHS activities. Prepare regular reports for management review.
Manage the creation, maintenance and dissemination of the company-wide EHS training program, Training-To-Gro annually, including new DVD development, e-learning solutions, etc.
Provide expert technical EHS support to business units for the development of regulatory interpretations and programs.
Participation in global EHS steering committees. Provide guidance and technical expertise to committees.
Lead the Field Sales business unit EHS program, including: injury tracking, investigation and corrective measures, leading multiple safety committees, providing daily guidance and expertise to each region.
Ensure EHS compliance for Marysville Corporate Campus including oversight of corporate facilities group, contractors, new hire orientation, vendors, etc.
This position is required to have above average communication skills in order to relate technical and regulatory information to government environmental agencies, operating personnel, management, etc. in order to accurately and effectively establish Scott Miracle-Gro’s health and safety program objectives.
This position requires the ability to analyze and transform an extensive amount of disjointed EHS data in such as manner that the divisions may proactively respond to identified trends.
This position requires the ability to forecast and plan for the needs of the company to allow demonstration of compliance and serve as a historical repository of all operations.
This position requires extensive knowledge of the scope of health and safety regulations.
This position requires the ability to effectively manage consultants, engineers, technicians and hourly associates.
This position requires project management skills – allocating appropriate resources when needed and adhering to established project time constraints as determined during the initial implementation of environmental projects, tasks and procedures.
Number and titles of positions directly supervised: 1 – Sr. EHS Specialist and 1 -Supervisor
Bachelor of Science in environmental, safety, engineering or other technically related field.
Certification in a related field desired (CSP preferred)
At least eight years in safety and health or related disciplines.
Minimum of five years of EHS experience in manufacturing, agriculture, or related field with increasing responsibilities.
Proven experience in leading change and implementing new ideas and concepts.
Track record of driving results through fact and data-based analysis and business process implementation.
Demonstrated ability to build lasting relationships and to gain cross-functional alignment for execution.
Proven ability to drive results working through others.
Expert knowledge of safety and health regulations
Intermediate knowledge of transportation regulations
Intermediate knowledge of international regulations
