Description Under the general supervision of the Boston University Affiliated Physician, Inc. (BUAP) Associate Director of Finance, this position is responsible for the oversight and maximization of BUAP’s billing performance, referral processes and related functions. BUAP is a separate 501(c)3 corporation that is independent of the BMC Faculty Practice Foundation. It currently includes six physician practices in Boston, Norwood, Taunton and Foxboro but is expected to serve as the nidus of BMC’s community physician network. Duties include overseeing the billing and ensuring budget goals are met for the current locations and any new community affiliates as well as serve as the primary liaison with the professional services billing vendor. (S)he oversees the Medical Billers and Referral Coordinators and participates in the day-to-day operations for all patient billing at all BUAP practices, including adherence to and creation of appropriate policies, education and training and performance monitoring of staff and the billing vendor. This individual will manage the revenue cycle processes, identify problems, make recommendations and implement solutions to achieve agreed upon goals. This position will also provide support the BUAP Associate Directors and Office Managers in the development, presentation, monitoring, and reporting of key financial metrics from an organization-wide level down to the physician level and the identification of opportunities to improve/optimize revenue (S)he will also be responsible for helping the organization develop systems and strategies to incorporate new groups into BUAP so it can grow and be financially sound. .
Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or health management (or equivalent) or commensurate experience is required.
The status of Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification is preferred. Must be in the process of working towards accreditation.
5 -10 years of billing experience, with a minimum of 3 years in supervisory or management capacity, in a health care or physician practice environment.
Knowledge of billing systems, medical coding, reimbursement issues, regulations and managed care guidelines.
Thorough knowledge of CPT coding and ICD-9 CM coding
Ability to supervise and train personnel at different competency levels
Strong analytical skills; with excellent Excel, database and report-writing skills.
Ability to take the initiative, problem-solves and works independently.
Strong communication and leadership skills and ability to work well with physicians.
Ability to manage multiple complex and concurrent projects.
Ability to mentor, guide and motivate direct reports through demonstration of best practices
