POSITION SUMMARY –
Under the direction of the Medical
Surgical Services (MS) Nursing Director, the Medical Surgical
Services Nurse Manager is responsible to provide, delegate, and
coordinate nursing care provided for the Medical and Surgical at
PRMC, and is guided by the policies and procedures of the hospital.
The MS Nurse Manager provides supervisory direction for the
development and evaluation of all nursing personnel, while
maintaining operational aspects of the patient care unit in
collaboration with support services. Contribute to nursing and the
hospital through support of philosophy and objectives, educational
and research efforts. Accountable to assure that HCAHPS, patient,
employee, and physician satisfaction scores are in acceptable ranges.
Accountable as a front-line supervisor for assigning, building and
directing teams to provide care to the patient’s assigned.
Accountable for assuring all nursing staff are following the National
Patient Safety Goals and Core Measure Initiatives without fail,
especially those specific to MS. Is proactive in identifying needs of
staff and resolves issues to improve patient care and supports
nursing leadership directives and initiatives. Embraces and oversees
shared governance model by ensuring the Clinical Unit Committee
occurs at least monthly with staff nurses to improve the unit
operations and encourages others to participate for a common goal for
performance improvement. Responsible for scheduling and payroll of
all department staff under the direction of the MS Nursing Director.
Attend department meetings as requested by nursing leadership. The MS
Nurse Manager utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan,
implement, and evaluate direct and indirect nursing care of the
patient. Population Served includes: Patient’s, family members,
visitors, physicians, nursing team, and other hospital disciplines

Requirements

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES –
A. 24/7 management
responsibility for the MS units, including, educating and overseeing
the competencies of the staff members.
B. Able to write
Policies & Procedures in concert with Title-22 requirements.
C. Has personnel, fiscal and material management, and coordination
of development and quality improvement program for the MS under the
supervision of the MS Director.
D. Assure that the highest
quality nursing care is delivered to the patient in the most cost
effective manner by the entire nursing team.
E. Assists the
multi-disciplinary team to return the patient to a state of optimal
wellness or to a state in which the highest quality of life can be
maintained.
F. Collaborates with all members of the health care
delivery team, nursing leadership, and senior management to deliver
quality health care in an efficient, cost effective manner.
G.
Attends Bed Meeting as directed and communicates patient flow needs
with the Nursing Director, Bed Control, and/or Administrative
Supervisor.
H. Is able to alternate plans effectively in a
changing, high pace environment, and communicate effectively in a
positive manner. Able to respond to all emergencies in a calm
demeanor.
I. Responsible for directing staff to follow all Core
Measure initiatives and assures they are completed prior to the
patient being discharged.
J. Responsible for driving the HCAHPS
survey along with the patient satisfaction survey in a positive
direction.
K. Completes the staff evaluation process and
ongoing guidance of the nursing team both verbal and written. .
L. Competent in overseeing payroll and ensuring staff clock
accurately, timely and prevent overtime as directed by the Unit
Director.

  • QUALIFICATION STANDARDS – (per the
CCS Guidelines and Nursing Leadership expectations)
A. Work
Experience: Minimum three (3) years previous experience as an RN in
the MS/Tele or other related units and minimum one year managerial
experience or equivalent.
„X Education & License
Requirements: RN. Licensed by the State of California holding a BSN
degree, currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Nursing from an
accredited college/university.

B. Certification Requirements:
BLS, ACLS..
C. National Specialty Certification strongly
recommended
D. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and
interpret general business periodicals, professional journals,
technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write
reports business correspondence, complete evaluations,
counseling’s and participate in maintenance and development of
policies & procedure’s. Ability to effectively present
information and respond to questions from all members of the
healthcare team, patient’s, families and the public.
E.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions,
percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Able to
balance unit schedules, acuities, and complete reports as requested.

F. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data,
establish facts, and draw conclusions. Ability to interpret an
extensive variety of technical/clinical instructions in mathematical
or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete
variables. Is able to utilize effective critical thinking skills and
coach other team members to do the same.
G. Special
Qualifications: Ability to manage all emergencies, a fast paced
environment and handle multiple priorities at one time. Must be
capable of making decisions under pressure and managing anger, fear,
hostility and violence of others appropriately. A good communicator
and treats all staff in a fair and consistent manner. Serves as a
coach, mentor and role model for other staff members. Can direct
department operation’s in the absence of the MS Director with
minimal assistance.
