Essential Qualification:
Education/Certification: Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Chain/Logistics or equivalent

combination of intellectual instruction and work experience. Required Knowledge:

Understanding of transportation network design and

transportation lane management

Experience Required:

4 – 7 years of transportation experience with a

minimum of 3 years managing retail or consumer

packaged goods transportation operations including

inbound, outbound to stores and outbound direct to


Familiarity with hub and spoke, or pool distribution


Management of annual transportation budget greater

than $10 million

Design and management of transportation lanes to

optimize freight out / freight in efficiencies resulting in

lower total company cost

Development and management of 3PL processes and


Skill and Ability:

Strong analytical skills

Exceptional communication skills to work in partnership

with Retail Stores and Direct Customer Service.

Job Description:
Job Summary:

The Manager of Transportation is responsible for the execution of the movement of all goods throughout Vitamin Shoppe’s Supply Chain – from source to consumption. The Manager will lead logistic activities for the Retail stores and Direct to Consumer web and catalog business channels. The Manager will drive results and make improvements in the business, leveraging partnerships, technology, process and data to make positive changes to the business. The position will oversee daily inbound and outbound shipment activity, cycle times and service levels to Stores and customers. Ownership and responsibility for the daily results and the performance of the Transportation network resides with this Manager.

Essential Functions :

Transportation Strategy and Planning

o Assist in the development and implementation of transportation management strategies to optimize the flow of goods in from our suppliers and out to stores or customers resulting in overall improvement in company margins and service.

o Strike the correct balance between service vs. cost in the direct-to-consumer parcel shipments to support the web and catalog channels.

o Support the rollout, and sometimes lead, change management initiatives, project activities and system enhancements which generate year-over-year improvements in service and cost.

Transportation Tactical

o Ensure the necessary resources, tools and equipment are in place to execute transportation services reliably and consistently each day, each week and each month. o Ensure inbound flow of goods arrive on-time to planned arrival dates using best mode/service provider and supply chain has planned ample capacity to receive and process goods.

o Work with 3PL logistics partners to identify consolidation and mode optimization opportunities in the movement of goods through the network to obtain the lowest cost at the right level of service and speed.

o During the normal course of business make sure carriers and vendors are working inside the parameters outlined in logistics compliance “Guide to Vendor Partnership”. Highlight exceptions and work to correct them.

o Ensure outbound delivery to stores arrive on delivery day and within delivery window, reliably, consistently and with quality.

o Manage through variability and changes in the network - gathering additional capacity or release capacity as needed.

o Develop and manage the process to effectively communicate transportation department performance, initiatives, and results to the organization and to your “end customer” (Stores and DTC Customers).

o Manage the carriers that provide services to The Vitamin Shoppe including meeting with carrier representatives to review base transportation related issues and carrier performance.

o Review current processes to identify cost and service improvement opportunities. Present alternatives and gather support for new ideas.

o Optimize the movement of all freight and direct shipments taking into account customer service, timeline, and cost.

o Review and monitor execution for all areas of logistics flow of goods and correct deficiencies in performance by implementing and monitoring corrective action plans with providers.

o Manage, administer, track and correct issues related to accessorial charges and freight claims with carrier partners .

o Ensure compliance to all regulatory issues.

Metrics/Reporting, Analysis and Financial Results

o Support the development of annual budgets and then manage and execute transportation activities in support of those budgets to help company achieve financial objectives. Own the results and make adjustments as necessary to reach agreed to financial targets.

o Maintain an effective transportation information reporting system.

o Perform ongoing analysis of transportation costs to determine opportunities and actions for cost saving and optimization of transportation expense.

o Monitor metrics and identify areas of improvement and implement tactical plans to realize better performance.

o Manage and utilize carrier scorecards and carrier performance review process.

o From time-to-time, perform necessary audits of carrier financial performance, invoicing and billing to ensure accuracy and correctness.

o Part of the performance measurements for this role will be financial performance to plan, the efficiency of freight movements and service metrics.

o Demonstrate a strong understanding of how to use data and analytics to identify opportunities and make decisions.

o Use data and facts to manage the network and build compelling business cases for change.

Communication and Collaboration

o Provide nothing less than exceptional communication and partnership with “customers” and users of the transportation services. Namely, Store Operations, Store Managers, District Managers and Customer Care.

o Always be proactive in sharing and communicating information, good and bad, that may impact any part of the retail or Direct experience.

o Establish and maintain communications with all carriers and service providers so events, problems and opportunities are shared openly in a quick and effective manner.

o Be an advocate for the Supply Chain and the Business by working collaboratively with other departments specifically aimed towards problem solving and improving the business. Build a strong network of supporters.

Other Functions:

§ Perform store visits.

§ Perform carrier hub visits.

§ Develop and conduct presentations to senior and executive management.

§ Recruit, develop, retain and grow future leaders in Transportation, Supply Chain and the business.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
§ There are analyst and support roles in the Transportation department and in the Supply Chain function to support the Manager role.

§ The Manager will work effectively and in partnership to leverage the resources in the Supply Chain, even if the resources are not directly supervised by the Manager.

§ Act as a mentor for other Associates in the Supply Chain.
