This is journey level work in the maintenance, repair and rebuilding of gasoline, diesel engines and other marine equipment in the Department of Transportation, Ferry Division. Assignments are received from a Marine Mechanic Supervisor; however, employees in this class usually determine methods or procedures necessary to complete repairs. Work may be reviewed in progress, upon completion through trial runs, and/or for serviceability through actual use. Duties include repairs and overhauls diesel engines which involve the disassembly, inspection and re-assembly of valves, pistons, rings, connecting rods, crankshaft, camshaft, bearings, timing gears and chains, valve mechanisms, injectors, and pumps. Maintains records of all work performed. Performs all other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
Working knowledge of the operating principles of diesel and gasoline engines; reduction gears;
hydraulic, air and electric control systems; and vacuum and pressure pumps. Ability to determine the cause of and procedures to follow in repairing malfunctioning equipment. Physical strength to move heavy objects and perform manual labor for considerable periods of time. Maintains and repairs small gasoline engines, air-cooled and outboard motors, generators, starters, and pumps. Performs all other related duties as required. This position works out of the N.C. State Shipyard at Manns Harbor, NC and work hours are 7:00am to 3:30pm Monday – Friday. In order to be considered, applications must be received by 5:00pm on the closing date of the posting.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Completion of grammar school and three years of progressive experience in the repair of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic, air, and electric systems, and components, preferably in the ship repair or shipbuilding industry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
