ASSISTANT TO THE MARKET DIRECTOR

$150.00 per week

Saturday mornings and occasional weekdays (mid-May thru mid-November)

5:30 a.m. until 1:15 p.m.

The Assistant will be responsible for on-site supervision of Market staff, enforcing Market rules and working directly with vendors and patrons during Market at the Square operations each Saturday from early May to early November. This position is seasonal and temporary, working approximately 8-10 hours each week for the duration of the Market at the Square (May-Nov.). The Assistant will also support the Market Director with public relations and administrative functions directly related to Market at the Square operations as needed.

Duties will include, but are not limited to: distributing vendor packets to vendors at the beginning of each Market day, swiping various cards and disbursing the correct amount in tokens to patrons during the Market, receiving vendor tokens at the end of the Market day, and some light accounting.

Requirements include:
Ability to work Saturdays and be punctual -must arrive at office by 5:20 AM and be on-site by 5:45 AM at the latest. Must be available the entire season from May through November.

Familiarity with Urbana's Market at the Square and farmers markets in general.

At least one (1) year of retail/customer service management experience, preferably in a farmers' market or outdoor market setting.

At least one (1) year of experience managing staff and/or volunteers.

General background and strong interest in healthy eating and improving access to affordable, nutritious food. Knowledge of local food preferred.

Microsoft office software and e-mail.

Ability to lift at least 35 pounds

Ability to multi-task; resolve conflicts and negotiating with others, handle complaints, settle disputes, resolve conflicts, and otherwise negotiating with others; be reliable, responsible, and dependable, and fulfill obligations; and positively represent the City of Urbana and Market at the Square to vendors, patrons and staff.

Must possess a driver's license and a safe driving record.

Must be at least 18 years of age

SPECIAL EVENT AIDES

$100.00 per day

Saturday Mornings (mid-May thru mid-November)

6:15a.m. until 1:15 p.m.

Special Event Aides assist the Market at the Square Director in event tasks, fields questions from the public and participants, maintains knowledge of participant transactions and space assignments, assists with purchasing supplies, runs errands, and sells merchandise. The ideal candidate has strong public relations and communications skills, helps other staff with set-up and tear-down and tasks in between, and possesses the ability to understand and support the overall mission of the Market at the Square.

Requirements include:
Satisfactory work history

A valid driver's license

A safe driving record

Must be at least 18 years of age

Ability to lift at least 30 pounds safely

Ability to work on Saturdays and be punctual

Ability and willingness to work in inclement weather

Good customer service skills

Ability to work independently

Professional work ethic

Strong cognitive ability and initiative

Must be available the entire Market season (May-Nov.)

Ability to work with people from different backgrounds.

SPECIAL EVENT LABORERS

$100.00 per day

Various Saturday Mornings (mid-May thru mid-November)

5:30a.m. - 7:30a.m. and 11:30 a.m. - 2:00p.m.

Special Event Laborers assist the Market at the Square Director in the following event tasks: loading special event supplies into a city vehicle, transporting the supplies to the event, setting up the items prior to the event, and removing and storing supplies after the event is over (supplies include items such as tents, trash barrels, tables, chairs, barricades, supply bins, sandbags, signs, beverage containers, etc.). The ideal candidate will be punctual, self-directed, able to creatively solve problems, and support the overall mission of the Market at the Square.

Requirements include:
Satisfactory work history

A valid driver's license and safe driving record

Must be at least 18 years of age

Ability to lift at least 50 pounds safely

Ability to work on Saturdays and be punctual.

Must be available the entire Market season (May-Nov.)

Ability and willingness to work in inclement weather

Good customer service skills

Ability to work independently

Professional work ethic
