Responsible for editing, creating, and managing copy in a wide range of print and digital applications that singularly promote the growth initiatives and marketing plan for both the Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) and the Water Works Park brands, as well as programs and services in all areas of business through websites, emails, direct mail, advertising, custom publications, social media, and other forms of design and delivery

Key Responsibilities:
  • Write copy that is compliant with the City’s style guide for the PLAY! Guide, summer guide, email communications, ad campaigns, print promotions, advertorials, websites, scripts, press releases, public meetings, Facebook, Twitter, and other mediums assigned
  • Research, plan, write, edit, and proofread copy for staff as needed to help promote individual and group programs and classes
  • Develop copy and manage weekly/monthly submissions for the Civic Center marquee, Denton Times PARD column, email newsletters, Denton Citizen Connection, Facebook, Twitter, and others assigned
  • Utilize the content management system (CMS) to publish, edit, and modify content on the PARD website, as well as learn SharePoint for future PARD pages
  • Develop online surveys to assist PARD efforts to increase retention and improve customer service in all areas of business
  • Maintain post PLAY! Guide deployment necessities that include web page updates, linking the interactive PLAY! Guide to online registration, creating or updating online calendars, and providing new content to external websites such as DFW Child, RunOn!, RunTex, and more
  • Participate in brainstorming new marketing campaigns and assist with the development of short term and long term marketing strategies for PARD and Water Works Park
  • Work with staff to create displays and support documents for expos, events, fairs, festivals, etc. Oversee department wide compliance of the City’s style guide and serves as a member on the City’s communications team
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in copy and editing as it pertains to PARD marketing communications
  • Develop on-going working and professional relationships with reporters, advertisers, and other professionals within the marketing and public relations community
Additional Duties:
  • Works with other departments to assist with communications efforts as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned, as well as works evenings, weekends and holidays as needed

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, advertising, English, journalism or creative writing with two years relative experience working in a public sector or nonprofit environment with an impressive portfolio
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency with four years relative experience working in a public sector or nonprofit environment with an impressive portfolio
  • Minimum one year CMS and email development experience
  • Proficient in CS6, preferably Master Collection on a Windows platform
  • Ability to respond and adapt respectfully
  • Ability to understand other people’s needs and be receptive and respectful to all work requests including those that are presented on a very short deadline
  • Must be able to prioritize multiple projects and flex priorities in a very busy deadline oriented atmosphere
  • Ability to organize and to multi-task

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 30 days of hire per state law)
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
