The Sr. Marketing Manager is responsible for leading the Strategic Planning process globally for the business; driving our POL process to support new business development, including market evaluation, validation of technology and value proposition and commercial launch preparation; driving improvements in business intelligence (markets, competitors, technologies, customers) to facilitate improved decision-making, innovation and growth; and increasing the usage of value-selling tools across business units. This individual is a thought leader who performs independently and has demonstrated the ability to effectively interact and influence all levels of organizations (PolyOne and Customers) including the VP/GM level.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The purpose of the Marketing Function is to deliver:
Gross margin targets as a percentage of sales.
Gross margin percentage expansion.
Vitality index growth.
Vitality GM targets.
New product launches.
Engagement of customers and the business leveraging key tools such as situational analysis, sales & marketing plans, the POL process, EVE tools, the pricing quote tool, marcom resources, effective product launch kits, etc.
Lead company-wide strategic planning process that results in the creation of insightful business plans that are focused on important strategic areas (e.g. innovation, growth, emerging markets, account retention) approved by CEO and Board of Directors.
Recommend and implement planning process efficiency improvements, create assumptions that serve as foundation of the plans, and track accuracy of these assumptions going forward.
Develop, implement and direct market and business strategies in key programs as identified. Implement customer segmentation, analysis of competitive positions and current capabilities.
Provide market intelligence on the trends, customers, competitors, technologies and other factors affecting the marketplace to support management decision making.
Improve the business intelligence skills of all marketers across the company. Assure that best practices tools and techniques are utilized and appropriate training provided. Stay abreast of market research and business intelligence practices through benchmarking efforts and active participation in trade organizations and conferences.
Prepare ongoing market analysis of existing PolyOne business versus the competition to determine the company’s strengths and weaknesses and contribute to the development of sales and marketing strategies. Track the activities of our top 7 competitors and provide regular updates to the business leaders.
Increase the usage of value-selling skills and tools across the organization. Drive business unit creation of new Economic Value Estimation (EVE) tools, manage the EVE Excellence Award process, and serve as Customer Centric Selling expert in support of business unit and sales training activities.
Conduct strategic analysis that increases executive insight and drives growth initiatives. Publish Situational Analyses to document finding. Select and manage outside consultants
in the completion of market growth studies.
Provide commercial-oriented information to senior executives in support of key investor relations activities, including the quarterly earnings calls. Publish monthly and quarterly updates for key market metrics (e.g. housing starts, automobile builds).
Incorporate Lean Six Sigma methodologies to streamline and improve strategic planning, business intelligence and value-added selling processes.
Travel periodically with sales, marketing and technical personnel to customer sites to conduct benchmarking and marketing discovery calls, provide market intelligence and information sharing, and provide training with value-selling tools (e.g. EVE tools).
Complete other projects/duties as assigned or needed.
This position is responsible to meet regularly with participants from General Management, marketing, Technical, Innovation and Sales Management in order to develop, implement and drive market-focused results.
Success of this position highly depends on the incumbent’s ability to influence and motivate key individuals in the organization to achieve success.
- BS Chemistry, Marketing, Business or Polymers.
- MBA strongly preferred
Successful track record of effective goal setting to achieve strategic business objective through focused motivational leadership
Broad knowledge of thermoplastics and other materials, including their properties, performance characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, and current and potential applications within the industry.
Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills are required to motivate, influence and persuade PolyOne personnel (senior executives, business unit leaders, peers) to accept recommendations and strategies.
Must be tactful, diplomatic and able to function effectively in a matrix environment; ability to develop in-depth marketing strategies; develop business relationships with key industry suppliers, customers, and internal personnel.
The position must have experience with and understand the global implications and needs of key suppliers, customers and internal personnel.
Ability to mobilize internally and externally to set and achieve business goals; able to articulate and drive required change and translate into actionable objectives for the extended marketing network.
Previous experience developing and implementing targeted marketing plans in value-added products preferred.
Ability to apply complex analytical and critical thinking skills.
Experience interacting with senior executives; possess executive presence and ability to communicate recommendations with confidence.
Excellent research and project coordination skills.
Ability to work well in a team environment, globally.
Demonstrated competency with technical writing skills, including technical articles, market reports, management briefings, and value-added sales literature.
Previous experience supervising professional resources, including hiring/firing decisions, conducting performance reviews, and setting goals and leading attainment of results.
Employee must be willing to travel occasionally (10-20% of time).
May supervise a small team of direct reports and has global interactions.
Is a global thought leader with the ability to influence cross functionally, globally.
Leads the function effectively and operates independent of supervision and direction.
Effectively coaches matrix personnel in other disciplines and business units to achieve results.
Demonstrated ability to influence effectively at the peer level as well as the next level in the organization including VP/GMs, globally.
Exceptional proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including PowerPoint, Excel, and Excess; SAP experience a plus.
