The Materials Laboratory Scientist will support the objectives of Worthington's business units and joint ventures by performing troubleshooting, product/process-development, and technical-research projects assigned to the Corporate Materials Lab.
-Participate in problem-solving, product/process-development, and industrial research projects assigned to the Corporate Materials Lab.
-Take ownership of various projects delegated by the Manager of R&D.
-Interview the job requestor(s) to clarify essential background information, expected deliverables, and key timelines.
-Design the appropriate research and testing schedule.
-Analyze the test results, summarize the key implications, and deliver with key data to the job requestor.
-Follow up with the requestor to ensure that objectives have been met.
-Hands-on testing of samples in laboratory investigations, including light microscopy, microhardness testing, and scanning electron microscopy.
-Coordinate testing performed at outside laboratories.
-Perform background research, both internal and external, to provide a basis for designing and analyzing problem-solving or development projects.
-Team with business-unit technical personnel on product/process development projects.
-Collect technical intelligence from primary and secondary sources. Analyze and summarize established or emerging technical issues in the marketplace, as requested by business-unit or corporate management.
-Stay current on significant technical changes in our marketplaces, and update need-to-know people in our organization.
-Provide consulting services to internal customers on materials-science issues.
-Develop a relevant network of internal and external technical experts for timely assistance in resolving projects.
-Develop a relevant network of external laboratories and other resource centers to support problem-solving and development projects.
-Manage laboratory equipment purchasing and maintenance.
-Help develop in-house analytical techniques.
-Direct the activities of laboratory technicians.
-In-depth knowledge of flat-rolled steel processing and metallurgy.
-Knowledge of aluminum processing and metallurgy a plus.
-Knowledge of metal forming, joining, assembly, and finishing.
-Familiarity with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.
-Broad knowledge of additional materials-analysis methods, such as FTIR, AES, XPS, XRD, etc.
-Experience in performing product failure analyses.
-Product and process design experience.
-Statistical analysis and experimental design experience a plus.
-Ability to organize and analyze large volumes of information and distill key points for decision makers.
-Familiarity with database design and other knowledge management practices.
-Strong communications skills, both spoken and written.
