To perform preventive maintenance, repair, and state inspections for City vehicles and equipment in order to keep them in service and operating safely and legally.
Essential Job Functions
Maintains safe and efficient operation of vehicles and equipment by providing routine and non-routine maintenance. Tunes engines using hand tools and testing equipment. Replaces parts such as fuses, bearings; troubleshoots and repairs electrical, heating and air-conditioning systems; performs major engine overhauls and repair; may perform state vehicles inspections. Maintains records regarding materials, parts, labor, and cost of repairs. Prepares new vehicles for service. Maintains safe and efficient operation of tires providing routine and non-routine maintenance. Maintains order and cleanliness of work areas. Performs other duties as assigned.
Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills
Knowledge of methods, principles, materials, tools and standard practices of modern automotive equipment technology; principles of operation of major automotive equipment systems such as electric, mechanical, heating and cooling, pneumatic, or electronic and typical causes of system malfunctions; the hazards and standard safety precautions of a machine shop; typical methods of identifying parts using parts catalogs; applicable State of Texas standards for state inspections; methods, parts and materials for providing routine maintenance and preventative care to equipment. Ability to diagnose and repair heavy truck and equipment hydraulic systems; engines; transmissions; brakes and electrical systems. Ability to read and understand a variety of manuals including shop, owners, diagnostic and other reference materials; diagnose defects and repair equipment units, vehicles, components, and apparatus. Skill to make adjustments to parts and equipment; operation maintenance tools and equipment appropriate to the assigned work. Ability to follow standard safety procedures; ability to understand and implement verbal and written instructions.
Licenses & Certifications
A valid State of Texas Drivers License. Three (3) ASE Certifications or the ability to acquire them within one (1) year.
Physical Tasks & Working Conditions
Ability to perform physical work requiring lifting 50 lbs. several times per day. Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, crawl and bend as required completing assigned tasks.

Minimum Education & Work Experience
High School diploma or GED, and attendance at a Vocational Trade School or two (2) years performing related work in a full-service vehicle and equipment maintenance facility of any other equivalent combination of education and recent and relevant experience which provides the candidate with the following knowledge, abilities and skills.
