Description

Position Summary:
Intuitive Surgical designs and manufactures highly-complex robotic systems for use in minimally-invasive surgical applications. We are seeking a candidate with exceptional machine design and analytical skills to play a key role in conceptualizing, developing and validating new concept designs for next-generation surgical systems. The engineer will play a lead role in design and development, as well as interfacing with surgical applications and clinical development engineers in order to iterate concepts. He/She will be equally comfortable developing new robotic mechanisms, identifying promising state-of-the-art sensor and actuator technologies, and producing high-quality hardware prototypes for clinical laboratory testing and eventual productization. The successful candidate must excel in a high-energy team environment and be capable of making sound decisions when faced with the time pressures, ambiguous, and incomplete information typical of research and development.

Roles and Responsibilities:
This position has responsibility and authority for:
Working with clinical engineers and clinical customers to develop requirements for new designs

Leading architecture development and broad exploration of mechanism design spaces, with careful consideration of robot workspace, manipulability, actuation and sensing modalities, motion control requirements, safety mechanisms, and failure contingencies

Rapid development and iteration of full-scale prototypes of candidate architectures and mechanism designs to satisfy both clinical and technical requirements

Designing for cost and manufacturability

Vendor selection and management

Concept documentation, preparation and review of patent submissions

Qualifications

Skill/Job Requirements:
A BS degree in ME, or similar. Graduate degrees or equivalent work experience preferred

A minimum of five (5) years of experience with machine design, preferably robot design experience. Surgical product experience is a plus

A demonstrated track record of delivering solid technical solutions to the marketplace

A passion for creating robust and reliable machines designed for mission-critical applications

Strong concept development, design analysis, and hands-on prototyping skills

An interest in the medical applications of robotics, with the ability to observe surgical procedures

Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication

Proven ability to drive to creative—yet practical—solutions from rough requirements, to identify new technologies and principles, and to rapidly develop product concepts and physical prototypes based on such technologies

Demonstrated ability to excel within a high-energy, small, focused team environment, to maintain a strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward, and to make work fun and interesting
