MechanicalDesign Engineer

Position Overview

This engineering position, reporting to Mechanical Engineering Manager in the Product Engineering group, will support all aspects of the design release engineering function at Proterra. The primary objective is to execute design solutions and release drawings for use in the production build process.

Design Release Engineers (DREs) will be assigned primary areas of ownership for specific vehicle system, subsystems, and components.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities

Participates in DFA/DFM activities during gamma build phase

Utilizes build incident alert process for capturing build issues and proposing design solutions to address issues identified on the shop or manufacturing floor during build events

Utilizes a 5-phase problem solving process for addressing field and validation test issues

Executes engineering change orders through a change management process including preparation of necessary documentation and thorough design reviews

Ensures completeness of all final release documentation for new builds

Defines validation activities for initial releases and design changes and make sure they are reflected on the master ADV plan

Completes and maintain DFMEAs and implement necessary risk reduction plans

Supports strategic sourcing process by authoring Statement of Requirements (SOR) and participating in supplier technical reviews

Supports integrated supply chain and quality organizations in managing vendor relationships and address issues which have the potential to impact design, quality, cost, or delivery of purchased components and systems

Education and Experience

1. B.S. degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.

2. 7 years minimum progressive mechanical engineering or design experience, preferably in the automotive or transportation industry

3. Design release engineering or project management experience required

4. Working knowledge of engineering change management & design release processes

5. New production program launch experience is highly desired

6. Proficiency in reading blueprints and communicating design changes

7. Proficiency in CAD, preferably SolidWorks , CSWA/P is a plus

8. Vehicle, heavy-duty, bus, truck, hybrid vehicle, alternative propulsion, or composite body experience is a plus
