Summary:
The Mechanical Engineer-Ponds is responsible for identifying opportunities to improve efficiencies/reliability in pond and harvest equipment and processes, leads efforts to scope, design and implement new equipment and prepares preliminary design, specifications and cost estimates as required.

IDEAL CANDIDATE Will Bring To The Table:
  • BS Degree in Engineering preferably in Mechanical or Civil Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in completion of Capital Projects with expertise in design, project scheduling & cost estimating.
  • Experience preferably in mining, minerals and/or heavy equipment application, heavy industrial 24/7/365 manufacturing environment.
  • Must have strong leadership & planning skills as well as organizational & communication skills.
  • Experience with pumps, brine, dykes/ponds & handling macro scale materials
  • A combination of technical skills in disciplines such as: crushing and sizing, material handling/conveying, pumps, hydraulic/pneumatic actuation, rotating equipment balance/alignment, vibration diagnostics, lubrication technology, slurry pumping and handling applications, equipment structural support, equipment foundations, mass and energy balances, equipment sizing and mobile equipment operation & maintenance
  • Experience overseeing projects outsourced to engineering firms and vendors
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Learns the pond and harvest system needs and requirements.
  • Conducts comprehensive analysis of harvest equipment for optimal size, proper application, lifetime cost and proposes changes accordingly.
  • Helps to plan for the Department’s future needs and productivity improvements.
  • Leads resources to perform engineering and construction management of ponds and harvest capital projects, as directed by the Engineering Manager and Ponds Operations Manager, utilizing appropriate project management tools to ensure that cost and critical path goals are attained.
  • Implements construction/installation strategies that minimize interruption to production plan.
  • Oversees effective commissioning and startup of project systems.
  • Competitively bids and awards capital improvement engineering and construction contracts, in conjunction with Sourcing group, based on analysis of bidder’s safety record, relative costs, and demonstrated ability to accomplish projects on time and within budget.
  • Ensures timely receipt of required materials and proper staging through effective leadership/coordination of company employees, vendors and contract personnel.
  • Supports a capital budget process and prepares projects schedules, detailed project scopes, project budgets and Capital Approval Requests (CAR’s).
  • Updates or creates maintenance/production operating instructions, engineering drawings, equipment records, O&M manuals and procedures.
  • Enforces proactive environmental, health, and safety processes in compliance with the law and with company policies and documented procedures. Ensures compliance with all company standards, practices, and procedures.

Deliverables:
  • By Q4 2014, reduce current $8MM heavy equipment maintenance costs by 10%.
  • Proper scoping, budgeting and execution of ponds and harvest capital projects.
  • Ponds Engineer and Ponds Operations Manager enabled to focus on efficiencies, chemistry and organizational improvement concepts.
Education and Experience:
  • A bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline, preferably mechanical engineering with direct experience in completion of capital projects.
  • Expertise and/or education in mechanical design, project scheduling and cost estimating.
  • At least five years related experience preferably in mining, minerals, or and/or heavy equipment application experience, preferably in a heavy industrial 365, 24/7 manufacturing environment.
  • Must have strong leadership and planning skills as well as organizational and communication skills.
  • Solid understanding of engineering drawings, files and efficient process for upkeep.
  • Proficiency with capital analysis/justification and familiarity with predictive/preventative maintenance.
  • Must have effective and verifiable leadership skills working within a diverse work force.
Computer Skills:
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should PC proficient and possess the ability to quickly master required computer skills required to function within the Engineering group.
  • Must be proficient in Windows 7, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, and AutoCAD.
  • Application, fabrication drawing preparations and interpretation and construction drawing preparations and interpretation.
