In Disaster Services, Mechanical Engineers are deployed as Project Specialists for the FEMA Public Assistance Program for the preparation of Project Worksheets. A Specialist has the expertise that is specific to their discipline. A Mechanical Engineer should understand HVAC systems, building water supply systems, elevators, and ventilation systems, be able to assess damages, prepare estimates, determine best practices for restoration, coordinate/manage other specialists and prepare technical reports. The mechanical engineer may provide assistance to the Building Assessment team (BAT). The mechanical engineer may have to determine mitigation opportunities for facilities such as waste and waste water plants, airports and other public buildings.
Candidates must possess at a minimum an undergraduate degree 2 years of practical experience, and completed the FEMA Operations I and II courses. A professional engineer’s license is not required, but is preferred. Experience in FEMA disaster response and recovery is preferred.
