Position Title

Media & Public Relations Program Coordinator

Position Summary

The Student Media & Public Relations Program Coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for all Logan campus student media organizations including The Statesman, Aggie Radio Station and the ASUSU Public Relations office. The coordinator will work in conjunction with the Division of Student Services, the Student Media Advisory Board, as well as, faculty, staff and students to develop and promote student media at Utah State University.


1. ADVISE & MANAGE STUDENT MEDIA: Advise and provide administrative guidance to The Statesman, Aggie Radio Station and the ASUSU Public Relations office. Assist these media organizations in developing and maintaining production schedules, reviewing written and verbal content and developing and monitoring budgets. Collaborate with the Department of Journalism and Communication in maintaining a pool of student writers, reporters and editors for media operations. Monitor and assist with the promotion of student events, projects and initiatives. 2. PROVIDE STRATEGIC PLANNING: Develop, implement and maintain a strategic plan to include goals, as well as, short-term and long-term objectives for the growth and promotion of student media on campus. Work with the Division of Student Services, the Student Media Advisory Board, faculty, staff and students to create a solid foundation for future growth of all student media. Establish strategic partnerships with local media and outlets. 3. TRAINING & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Establish and implement a series of training sessions for student media groups to promote skills in journalism, broadcast media, leadership, mass communication (written and verbal) and teamwork. Collaborate with Career Services to identify internship opportunities. 4. CREATE BUSINESS PLANS: Establish and maintain a business plan (advertising, operations and revenue) for each media organization. Partner with the business office to ensure compliance with all University and University System guidelines. 5. OVERSEE MEDIA ADVISORY BOARD: Serve as Chair of the Student Media Advisory Board. This includes overseeing the recruitment and selection processes for the student media organizations' editors/managers. 6. IMPLEMENT NEW MEDIA: Create a new online publication, including oversight of all social media, a website, mobile applications and web revenue. This position will also be responsible for keeping up with industry trends, emerging technologies, new content areas and online journalism trends. 7. FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Oversee each program's budgets and expenditures. Review all purchase card transactions, check requests and travel authorizations. 8. STUDENT CONDUCT: Ensure students follow Utah State University and Student Involvement and Leadership Center policies and procedures. 9. SPECIAL PROJECTS: Assist with special projects as needed. 10. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in Communication, Journalism, Media or a related discipline. 2. 5 years' experience, or combined equivalency of education and experience. Experience in print media, student media advisement, and exposure to radio broadcasting required. 3. Experience with media management, either business or editorial. 4. Proficient knowledge and use of technology and desktop publishing software, graphic design hardware/software, business management, publishing laws, first amendment, knowledge of College Media Advisors Code of Ethics and knowledge of new media/social media (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, WordPress, etc.) 5. Effective interpersonal, teamwork, organizational, time management and customer service skills. Demonstrate an ability to develop and implement strategic plans or project management. Skills in newspaper/publication layout and design and radio broadcasting. 6. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with a variety of constituents including students, faculty, administrators, and community members. Demonstrated ability to set and achieve goals within media venues. Ability to communicate effectively in English. Ability to establish strategic media partnerships to further student skill sets.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Master's degree. 2. Experience teaching and/or mentoring students. 3. Experience as an editor-in-chief or managing editor for a newspaper, news website or radio station.
