Human Rights First is seeking a full-time Media Relations Associate in its New York City office. The ideal candidate for this vacancy is a media savvy, detail-oriented individual who works well with people and under deadline. He or she should possess strong writing, editing and research skills, excellent news sense, a familiarity with new media, and a basic knowledge of media pitching.
This position reports to the Media Relations Director and interacts with all members of the communications team and Human Rights Firsts policy staff.
Cultivate relationships with reporters, editors, producers, bloggers and other media professionals with the goal of influencing American lawmakers and the public to understand and act on current human rights issues;
Generate media coverage through targeted pitching, especially to journalists in the New York City market;
Identify potential media opportunities;
Prepare, review and copyedit news releases, op-eds, blog posts, letters to the editor and other communications and press materials;
Work with Human Rights Firsts communications team to ensure timely responses to media inquiries and delivery of accurate information upon request;
Prepare spokespeople for interviews with the press;
Work closely with and strategize with colleagues in the Communications Department including the web team, media associates and communications strategists;
Coordinate media availabilities for Human Rights First staff and spokespersons;
Plan and staff press events in New York City;
Help to compile daily press clips;
Track key advocacy targets to identify future press opportunities;
Assist with management of NYC-based communications interns.
